first time user... URGENT HELP NEEDED

i gave boo her first lantus shot today. started her with 1 unit at 8:30am. Her BG was 580. I checked her in 2 hours and the BG had spiked to "HI" on the machine. I am going to check her in another hour to see if it has come down a bit. I understand she is on a high carb diet and that may have caused her sugar to go up more. Im still trying to find a food solution that is good for her diabetes and CRF. There aren't a lot of options available here for her condition. There is nothing available from all the different food lists i have seen.

My point is, how long should i wait till i start panicking and rush her to the vet. Boo is not showing any signs of hyperglycemic shock yet.

I just checked boo again, reading still says "HI"

Basically 4 hours after her shot and her reading still says "HI"

p.s. I think the machine cannot read beyond 600
 
Hi there

You said you gave boo her first shot of Lantus. Lantus builds a depot of insulin under the skin and it takes about three days for that to fill. Once that is full, then the insulin is able to work on the immediate problem. Boo will be high, especially on high carb food, until Lantus starts to work. It just doesn't happen that fast.

Another thing we look for is the nadir which is the point in the 12 hour cycle that the insulin kicks in. My sugarcat's nadir is around +6. So you will not see an immediate affect and maybe none at all for a couple of days. That nadir number is how we figure out proper dosing. Starting boo on 1unit is good but you may find she needs more because of her diet. Time and testing will tell us that.

I don't know why you would run her to the vet for high numbers after only one shot of Lantus. I don't think that is necessary. We usually get worried when the bg number goes very low.

There are people here who will explain all of this much better but I wanted to respond because you seem panicked. It's a dance, not a race and most of us have had to put on our patience pants.

I had a foster cat whose bg was HI for weeks until I could transition her off the high carb dry food. Once she transitioned, her numbers came down.
 
The Friskies Special Diet pâtés are both low carb and low in phosphorus, so that might be an option for you guys.
 
Poster is in Dubai, U.A.E. and has indicated that the Friskies Special Diet foods are not available there.
