First time home-checking questions

So our Luna is out of remission for seemingly no reason. Before we were giving her insulin and doing spot checks at the vet but I want to try and 'get on top of this' as it were and test here at home.

1) How often should I be checking her BG levels? When? Before she eats, after she eats? Before insulin? Etc.

2) How do I properly adjust insulin levels to compensate?

Sorry you have to be back. We'd suggest testing every time before feeding and before giving a shot and then at the lowest point in the cycle (usually 5-7 hours after the shot) and maybe a before bed test when you can.

Adjusting the insulin cries, depending on the type you are using. What kind? What dose?

Thanks. Yeah she was in remission for 4 months (we got her 6 months ago and quickly changed her diet to much success) and I don't really understand how she 'came out of it', maybe that's just how things are.

So we're talking about approximately 4 checks a day? I've yet to do one, hopefully it's not too hard! :) I did a few on myself just so I can better 'sympathize' I guess.

If she eats at 9am and 9pm would it be basically 2 tests in the AM, 1 in the afternoon [5-7 hours later], and then 2 more at night around feeding?

She's getting Lantus. Last time (before remission) she was on measly 0.5 units. She's never been hypo/hyperglycemic thankfully. Would the 5-7 hour range still be good for testing using Lantus?

Thanks for your reply, vet wasn't helpful when it came to asking about home testing. "I would never advise that".
 
Yes, the nadir for Lantus often falls between +5 to +7, though there can be day to day variation.

Of course he wouldn't recommend testing; its money out of his pocket, because you'll get more accurate numbers testing at home with an inexpensive glucometer!

He told me to come 4 times a week, that's $400 a month - he's out of his mind.
