Bought up and up target meter and lancing devices. Missy 1yr old is off insulin since tue, bc vet gave denamerin fo high liver count. Was told need glucose check today or tomorrow. She is getting lactulose instead of water. What time to I try get reading? Feed am was 9.15. Would give a tiny snack of food with pedialite around 4-5pm but not sure if that would mess glucose. New and nervous. Please help.

Hi Missy's Mom,

I'm a newbie here, but I would recommend that BG be taken before a meal. For example, first thing in the morning, before you feed her, or if you feed her at night, before you put down the food.
If I read your email, Missy is not getting insulin right now?

Is the purpose of checking her BG at home in case it shoots up too high? Perhaps you should check it before her 4PM snack / pedialite ?

Not sure exact detail why vet unclear but she may be anyway ready to wean off insulin based on last blood work. If I can't do it, she needs hospitalization to monitor for wk. Icant afford all this. We may just give her up. It is all taking too much out of me. Noone wants her yet, so I am left with no option but 1 day at a time.

Hey, no worries. If want to test today or even practice test, just do it right before her meal or snack. BGs go up right after a meal.
If you are a morning person, then test tomorrow before her AM meal. Have you watched the videos / read the resources on this website on how to test. It took us a little while to get the hang of it, but once we learned the process (as described on this website /forum), it is really easy now.

I did but need to refresh before I do it. I am late to eat and ataarving. I think I need that before I atempt new thing. How long after snack does glucose lower again? If medicine is at 8pm maybe will do it before that so I have time to review info. Will drop snack for now, can give biger snack later instead.

I am shaking, so excited. I watched video and read instructions. Did my first glucose reading with missy. At 7.20pm she was 72 on the up and up meter. Got it first time. The burrito towel wrap instruction was helpful. First she got tiny treat for going to the special place. Once she was tightly wrapped in a towel, I gave her treat and stroked her. Spent a while soothing her. She was fine. I am soooo excited. I didn't think it would go well first time.

I called the vet mobile administrator and gave him the reading. He told me test every 3-4 days. I think probably need more often. Waiting for feedback from this group as to how to proceed.

She is NOT on insulin right now. How is it that she is ok with going cold turkey. Not sure if that has to do with medicine. She is on denamerin for last 2 days and clavamox and tons of pedialite. The administrator said next visit in a month when denamerin is finished. He said she is probably in remission, I hope that is correct.

How often should I test her? Is once a day sufficient? Should it be same time of day?

72 is great.. Normal cats are 50-130. I would test a couple of times a day for now, and if she can stay in the normal range for two weeks, then she is officially in remission.

Ps the pedialyte doesn't have sugar in it does it?

Thanks how do I work out the timeline for testing. She eats at 12 hour intervals with small snack about 3 hrs before feed. Snack is not scheduled strict. Its based on when I am home and how crazy she is getting, so snack calms her a litttle. I can make a snack schedule for 2 wks if needed, if i know how I need to spread out blood tests.

25 grams dextrose in 1 litre bottle of pedialite

Since she isn't getting insulin you could test her in the morning before breakfast or before bed. To help support her pancreas it would be better to give her many mini meals through the day instead of just two. Maybe leave the food out or freeze some and it let it defrost naturally. Or get a timed feeder.

Thanks. This cat will not graze, she will waffle down all of it in one go. That's how I got so much pedialite down her. She is soo greedy that she will turn away from it and come right back. She is a greedy little bugger, enjoyed eating disposable gloves until we realized what was happening. The structure of 2 times a day has made it so much easier to monitor her care, I can leave without worying about her.

I was giddy with excitement. I am NOT a calm person, but worked hard to relax and not worry about the outcome. I did it I was calm. I trusted myself. Then later I forced her pill down her, and actually laughed at how she wouldn't give up her fight. I actually laughed. Miracle. Not freeking out. I am on cloud 9 right now. Miracles can happen. I used to be scared of cats. I am grossed out by needles and blood. Now I am caring for a diabetic cat, did shots and blood test and laughed. Missy is an expensive, troublesome but wonderful therapist. I am so glad that I didn't find another home for her yet.

If not constant health issues to keep running to vet. The low cost mobile vet takes a full day away. If I can have a normal life with her than that would be perfect. Concerned bc diabetics are more prone to health issues. Hoping strict regular monitoring can help prevent trouble. I will have to take it as it comes. If her care gets too complicated and time consuming, I may have to say goodbye.

We are so proud of you! You are awesome! Taking care of a diabetic cat has its ups and downs.
