Hello!
Today was our first attempt at a glucose curve. Sweet Domino figured out how to open our food bin. . . I have no idea how much she ate. It happened within a 15-20 minute time frame. Should I continue with the curve or not? :arghh: So frustrated. I really wanted to have a good base line before the switch to low carb wet, so that we would know how to adjust her lantus.

What sort of numbers is she getting on the food she's on at the moment? And how long has she been on Lantus and at what dose? Also, can you get some mid-cycle tests if you do start changing her food - in fact do you have any mid-cycle test data from before today to see how low the dose is taking her even with the dry food? It might be that you can start to transition her to low carb food without a full curve, but without much data to work from it's difficult to tell for sure. If you can set up a spreadsheet for Domino - instructions are here http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...te-a-ss-and-link-it-in-your-signature.130337/ - that would really help everyone here to give you the right information based on how Domino is doing. :)

Depending upon the PS, you may want to get a BG at about 6 hours if PS is going down since insulin needs will likely decrease with transition to low-carb canned.

Ok. I have added her spreadsheet to my signature. She is having a crazy high day. . . But this is our starting place, so I really have no clue :(

She has been on 1/u of Lantus BID. 7am and 7pm. She was started on the dose at the ER vet on 04/13/15 so 2 weeks and 1 day. She is eating Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry about 1/4 cup in the am and pm. She weighs just over 6lbs, so she is considered a perfect weight by her vet.

Thank you for adding the extra information - it really does help. :)

I do notice she went down to 68 at her PM +2 on 4/26. That's fairly low for a +2 test so you will need to be careful while switching her food over to make sure she doesn't go under 50. I wouldn't concern yourself with the numbers today - you know she got into the dry food, so her numbers are going to be a little off for a few hours. Even that data is worth having because you can see now how she reacts to getting into food she shouldn't have had! The starting dose you were given is a little high for a 6lb cat - at 0.25 units per kg, her starting dose should really have been either 0.5 or 0.75 (it actually works out to 0.68) so if you're going to change her over to low carb wet food, you might also want to consider reducing her dose for safety while you change the food over and then see where she is once she's fully onto low carb food for adjusting the dose.

Changing the food may drop her glucose 100-200 mg/dL and drop the insulin dose as much as 2 units. Do it gradually, 20-25% per day, so you can monitor and adjust safely.

Sounds good, but I am okay to start the transition, right? I just need to check her bg before shots, and maybe once mid cycle?

Yes, so long as you are testing. You may wish to reduce the insulin as you start dropping the carbohydrate level.
