I just thought I'd share that I finally had my first success getting a BG reading at home! I've been working with Ebby for about a week, getting her conditioned to the routine, and as of yesterday tried to draw blood. On my 2nd attempt today I finally got a large enough sample, and Ebby was very cooperative. I couldn't believe how well she tolerated it! Finally! I've had a different attitude about testing her this time around: I figured if Lions can be trained, surely I can train a cat to do this!

I really wanted to get a reading today because she was acting weird. Her BG was 237 and this was 2.5 hours Post Shot.

If anyone has an opinion on the BG that would be great. I may try to retest later, but don't want to push my luck for today...we'll see.

She is on Prozinc and we're doing a heavy .5 dose. We don't have 1/2 unit syringes so I just try to come as close to .75 as I can.

Just to give you a range. We generally think cats are regulated if the are in the low 200s at preshot and in double digits at nadir, but not below 40. For new diabetics, the cut off for a shot is 200. If you get a preshot of 200 or under, wait 20 minutes without feeding and retest. You want a rising number over 200 before a shot.

So your number isn't bad. If you get preshot numbers daily and a midcycle number whenever you can, you'll be able to tell how the insulin is working.

We have a great color coded spreadsheet where you can keep your data. Here are the directions:

It's a little tricky, so if you need help, ask.

I am new to this too and so just wanted to say congratulations! I know how scary this is at first. Great job!

Good job on the testing!! As Sue said, a spreadsheet would be very useful for us, and you.. helps track trends and behaviours so that you have data to make changes to dose etc. Let us know if you need help with it.
