First rabies vaccine at 15

I just got a call from our new vet-to-be, to inform me that the state of Virginia requires rabies vaccination for all cats and they would have to vaccinate Chewie in order to take her on as a patient. I'm really scared, she never got one before as she was always indoor-only, and all the holistic vets we saw on the West Coast over the past 16 years did not recommend vaccinating after the kitten series (which all my cats got).

Now she is 15, has diabetes, and I'm just terrified it's going to mess her up :(

I'm going to call around to see if a different vet might allow us an exemption since she is a senior cat with a medical condition, but then we run the risk of not getting her seen soon enough to get her next insulin pen, which would cause a lapse in treatment (our Mark's Marine Pharmacy order won't arrive for several weeks).

I wish they would have told me that when I made the appointment, and not just a few days before... (her appt is on Tuesday)

Has anyone been in this position before? Are your own sugar kitties doing ok with regular rabies vaccinations?

PS: I'm also very scared for my other kitties... they're all 15-16 and all have health issues: one with chronic pancreatitis and asthma, one with IBD, one with chronic allergies. Gah.

I do not believe in vaccinating indoor cats myself. I lost 2 kitty's to the tumors that the vaccines cause. I was forced to get my sugar boy Panzer's rabies shot a little over a year ago because they refused to treat him & I needed insulin for him. That is the one & only rabies vaccine he has ever had. He will be 11yrs old in January. My now 3rd vet is refusing to see him or give him any prescriptions. Luckily I have 2 Lantus pens that DCIN sent me, so that should get me through the winter. I have the name & number for a holistic vet but I haven't called them yet. I understand your concern because I am right there with you! I hope you can find someone in time. Maybe the supply closet has a pen that you can get to get you through until your order from Marks marine comes. It's worth a try. Good luck to you & keep me updated.

I am so sorry about the loss of your poor kitties, @Chrispooky12 ... I have several friends who have lost cats to the same issue (one of them used to get the shot in the back leg instead of the scruff, even after amputation the cancer spread and killed her), so I'm really nervous. After my initial moment of panic I emailed a few holistic vets in Richmond to ask if they would consider a waiver. I might just cancel this appointment and try to contact the person in Portland who is selling unused Lantus.

I can't believe your vet is being so obtuse... it's so frustrating. If you need help getting insulin down the line I'd be happy to help any way I can. Thank you for your support!

Found a holistic practice who do not require vaccinating her, will do a full hour take-in exam on Monday and work with us on her diabetes. This might have been a blessing in disguise... phew.

This ended up being mostly a freaked out monologue, I'll see if I can delete the post
