First proper curve, dosing advise needed

About two weeks ago I really never thought this would be possible, but here it is, a proper curve done on Saturday. And he was really a very good boy about it, we had one or two wriggles, but mostly he settled down enough for me to get the readings.

I had a yellow number this AM, and I'm sure he will surf green for the rest of the day (that's what happened yesterday), but I decreased the dose this AM from 1.50 to 1.25, just because there is no one there the whole day, and I'm worried. Did I do the right thing, or did I mess things up by decreasing...I don't want his doses to bounce everywhere, but I'm worried he will go too low with no one there. Should I just go back to 1.50 and stay there regardless? When does a kitty earn a decrease? Help!

Looks very good.
Max looks as if he bounces after a grenn number. This is quite common, just means body freaks a little because it can't remember seeing such low numbers in a while and dumps some extra glucose into bloodstream for good measure (natural life saving response)

Newly diagnosed kitty (less than say 6months to a year) under 50 is a reduction without question.
Longer term diabetics need to go under 40 to earn one.

Do not beat yourself up. What you have done is perfectly natural, the safest thing to and gives you peace of mind.
If you can be home tonight for monitoring I would go back to your 1.5u.
All it means is might take (might not) another day or so to get your breakthrough. Sometimes an initial dose has great positive effect and then numbers start rising-no way of knowing at the beginning of your sugar dance which one your kitty is going to be.

You also need to try and be aware if your kitty is likely to feed himself if his numbers do drop-this is added insurance and p3eace of mind for you.

So, tonight if number in the high blues or above go back to 1.5u-get a +2 and depending on that a +4 and 6 (sleep allowing)
His shed will have emptied a little (or he could be rare like my kitty was and have a shed of steel-ie despite reduced shot doesn't seem to effect his numbers much).

If ever your in doubt or worried-err on the side of caution. You can always make up ground, you can't get more than one of the same kitty :mrgreen:

Good job with the curve!

I agree with everything Kate said. I would go back to the 1.5u. While a drop from the 200s to the 80s is a big one, he's not in danger there, and his body needs some more time to get used to the lower numbers without bouncing so hard when they happen. The more he gets into the greens, the more that will happen--I think. I'm definitely not an expert, but I think that's the way it works from the spreadsheets I've looked at.

It's really hard in the beginning to hold a dose, but the more tests you get, the better equipped you'll be to figure out how your cat reacts to the insulin and food, and you'll be able to predict what will happen. And he needs more time with green and blue numbers to allow his body to heal and get his pancreas functioning properly again.

Congrats on the getting your first curve! I just want to encourage you to get tests during the PM cycle. Even with that red number last PMPS, it's still good to get at least one PM spot check. It can let you know when rebound is breaking. Just because a number is high at pre-shot, doesn't mean it won't drop low at mid-cycle. (Gabby has gone from the 400s to the 40s and back to the 400s in one cycle and earned a dose reduction. If I hadn't tested, not only would I have not known, we might have increased her dose.)

I'm not sure that I would agree about the two different doses. I'm not a big fan of shooting different doses in the AM and PM. It plays havoc with the shed. I'd rather see that you find a dose that you are comfortable with and can shoot consistently. Lantus likes consistency -- otherwise, you end up with weird numbers. If this is a one time situation, that's different but I wouldn't encourage your shooting different amounts on a regular basis.
