Hi everybody. :) I've been lurking and reading so much over the past couple of weeks. My kitty was diagnosed 4/23. He was rapidly losing weight and it all seemed to come on pretty quickly. He has been prescribed Novolin, which I have read is not the best so I really want to change that soon.
Started at 2U twice a day. Numbers still kinda high so I called vet last week and he said to up his dose to 3U but I really didn't feel comfortable doing such a high increase (due to reading so much here) so I upped it just a bit. He seemed to be bouncing up more with numbers going into the 500's after the increase, so just today I put him back down to 2U. I read on the Facebook group that TOO much insulin could have a negative effect as well. ??? I do not trust this vet very much as he doesn't really seem to know a lot and offered VERY little information. Everything I have learned has been on here and the FB page. I am a research queen!!
Taco has gained ALL of his weight back and looks SO GOOD in just three short weeks. I just wish I could get his numbers down. I know I need a different insulin and the vet is willing to prescribe Lantus but wanted to see how he did upping his dose first.
So I'm not sure what I'm asking or what questions I have. I just wanted to post and see what other's opinions are. I have linked his spreadsheet in my signature.
Just to add -- I have not been doing his AMPS test because my husband gives it to him while I'm still sleeping. I know I need to start doing that soon but his numbers have been so high that I thought for right now it is okay to do that and I don't see him going into hypo right now. I either need to change his shot schedule or teach hubby how to test. Or just bite the bullet and wake up to do it myself. Lol!

Hi and welcome to you and Taco. He’s a gorgeous boy!
You look very organised. Great to see the signature and the SS done!

The thing about Novolin is it is a fast acting harsh insulin, not suitable for cats at all. So I would get Taco swapped over to Lantus as soon as you can. You will see much better results.
I would also really try and get a BG test done before you give every shot. You really can’t guarantee that the BG will be high enough to give the dose and with it dropping the BG early and fast, you would be in big trouble if the BG wasn’t high enough to start with.

I would only increase the dose in 1/4 unit increments. It is a big jump from 2 to 3 units.
Are you feeding Taco an hour before giving the insulin each time?
Because it hits fast, you need to make sure he has eaten well and it has had time to be digested.
With Lantus you can test, feed and shoot in5 minutes but not with Novolin.

Hi and thank you for your response! :) I have read all about Novolin and yes we do the feed, wait one hour and shoot. And you are totally right, I need to start testing him in the AM too and I will start doing that.
I think I am going to call the vet today and see about getting a script for Lantus.
