Hi all, new here and just wanted to give a little intro.
This beautiful boy is Mufasa (Moody). I got him in 2013 (he was 8 years old then) from a not so great person who wanted to kill him. We quickly connected and I became his human slave.
He's always been a healthy boy except for the nasty flea allergy he gets about once a year.

In late October 2020 I began to suspect he had diabetes based on the increased water consumption and the weightloss. However at the same time my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer and had back surgery which left him unable to walk. All my attention went to helping my dad out. April 2nd 2021 my dad passed away.

So April 22 I was able to finally get my baby Moody to the vet, after getting everything else settled.

His sugar was 600 but no ketones in urine.
The vet recommended changing his diet and gave us a list, started us on 1unit of Prozinc 2x a day, and set us up for a curve in 2 weeks.
I will be doing home monitoring after I come back on May 3rd from helping my mother in law move. My husband will be here giving him his insulin while I am gone but works 12 hours so I'm not sure how much testing he could do between work and sleep.
We just wanted to check in and say Hi and give everyone a little info on us.

Hi Becky and Moody and welcome to the forum
I am so sorry to hear about your Dad that must have been very hard and sad for you.
I am glad you are going to be testing the Blood glucose levels.
If you haven’t bought a glucose meter yet I would advice you get a human meter. You can buy very reasonable ones from Walmart. You will also need some lancets...get 26 or 26 gauge ones. They are much cheaper to run than pet meters. Walmart has good ones called ReliOn meters.
Is your husband going to be testing the blood glucose while you are away?

I would also get him onto a low carb wet diet. But if you are currently feeding dry food I would wait until you are home testing as swapping over to a low carb diet can drop the BGs by up to 100 points amd you need to be monitoring the BG while you do this.

and Prozinc dosing methods https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/prozinc-dosing-methods.225629/

If you could get the spreadsheet up and running that would be great. Don’t just blindly give the 1 unit of Prozinc twice a day and think everything will be fine because cats insulin needs change very quickly.

Make sure you have a hypo kit ready. Thee is a link hypo kit within this link
