? First new vial of Lantus

I am about to finish Phoenix's first vial of Lantus. It has lasted from the end of March until now. My question is the dose I give him when starting a new vial. Is it safe to continue with the same 6 units? Does the strength of the Lantus get weaker the older it gets? Should I lower the dose for the first few shots to see how he does?

Please let me know. I only have a few doses left in the old vial. Thank you

As long as the vial was kept in the fridge the whole time, didn’t get too hot or frozen or have any floaties in it, it should be fine. Some people have vials last 5-6 months. Your is likely OK, you don’t need to reduce. However, I might not increase on the same cycle as a new vial or pen.

My first vial of Lantus lasted almost a year. We weren't giving a much as you so Luci's insulin lasts quite a bit longer. I keep it in the fridge (not the door or veggie drawer)...but the coolest spot - and use it to the last drop.

Haven't ever had a vial or pen go bad...only bad things that happen are Luci's numbers - which are all about Luci and have never been about the insulin...

Have a great day!

I am sorry but I guess I didn't make my myself clear. I was asking if I should decrease the dose when starting a new vial. Is there a chance it could be stronger than my old vial?

Oh I'm sorry. I thought Wendy answered your question when she said 'However, I might not increase on the same cycle as a new vial or pen.'

I doubt that it's stronger, but it's always safer to wait a cycle or two to make changes...that way you kinda know which change had an effect...be it positive or negative...

Thank you. I was kind of nervous starting a new vial. Phoenix's numbers are starting to go down for which I am very grateful. I was scared that a different vial might be stronger and decrease his numbers more than usual.

I am also grateful for all the people on this forum for responding to my questions. It is because of all of you that my cat is getting better. Thank you all so much !!!!

I think it's best to make small changes...one step at a time...that way you can determine if one thing affected Phoenix's numbers...too many changes at one time can become confusing - especially if you see some unexpected numbers..

Have a good evening Susan!
