Hello all,

I finally tested Rocco's BG level at home. It wasn't pretty. He hates having his ears touched and he was fighting me the whole time. I felt so bad pricking his little ears and I had to prick him a few times. I kept going up on his ear and I would get a little blood, I tried massaging his ear and whenever I got enough blood...I would get an error on the machine. I went to the other ear and after 4 tries (2 on each ear) I finally got a reading. I figure it was a little high since I was stressing him out (I was stressing too) and it was 174 (I tested him on Monday, I just haven't been on my computer since). I did give a treat afterwards, so he did forgive me.
I want to do a curve on him, but I want to give him a break and learn how to test on his paws. I have an appointment with the vet on Monday, to see how he's doing and to see if there is any difference between my BG machine and theirs. I will have them show me how to prick his paw since testing on his ears didn't go so well. He has always hated his ears being touched and they are so little compared to the rest of his body.
On a good note, I did find someone who can house-sit and watch the kitties when I eventually have my gastric bypass surgery later this year. She grew up on a farm and had no problems with Rocco's feeding schedule and giving him his insulin. One less thing to stress about.
Thank you for all of your advice. I will definitely let you know how his vet appointment goes. THANK YOU!!

Hi Nicole!

Congratulations on your first test and those numbers aren't too shabby either!

I can't test my kitty on the ear either - he won't have any of it. I use his "dew claw". There's only one on each foot and it's higher than the pad, but less sensitive and less chances of it getting infected because he's not walking on it. It's been a piece of cake for us.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you don't feel like you've received good instruction at your appointment and I could try and video it and send it to you for reference.

Keep your chin up - you're doing a great job!

Congrats! That's really a good number. When was the test in relation to his insulin dose?

I'm glad to know that its a good number. Considering his BG was in the 500's when he was diagnosed, I figured it was pretty good. He is getting back to his old bratty self. Yesterday, he was pawing at my other cat Hera. He had jumped up on the couch where she was at and starting bothering her while she was giving herself a bath. Its a good sign, he's being a brat, moving around alot more. He's always been brat, so today when he knocked the remote off the bed...I was smiling.
I took his BG level about 90 minutes before I fed him for the evening.
