I was told to post this here as well because my kitty is on Lantus. Gave her a shot of 1cc at 10:15. Tested her glucose 6 hours later and it was 65. It's a human meter. I'm gonna fast her for 2 hours before her next shot and give her a test first. I heard with Lantus, you want to give them day and night shots. But if her numbers are still low.....Do I skip the shot? And what is low? Thank you all.

Congratulations on your first test! :cat:

Is there any chance of getting another test at +7 (i.e., 7hrs post-AM shot, an hour after your last test) in addition to the planned PM pre-shot? Just want to make sure she's not dipping any further-- 65 is a fantastic number, but you don't want her going too much lower.

To answer your question, when you are still new and gathering data and getting to know your cat's patterns, we say that above 200 should be OK to shoot, below 200 requires caution.

If you get a number below 200, stall-- don't feed her yet, post here for some advice and to get people paying attention, and then test again in 20-30mins, reporting that number. Lantus takes a couple hours before it really gets going, so it might be OK to shoot a lower-than-usual number because it's clear that blood glucose is moving upwards and will be high enough by the time the shot takes effect.

That 65 is very exciting in a very new diabetic-- she's doing great already!

I would-- hate to wake her up from what sounds like a lovely sleep :D, but just to get a little better picture of what is going on today.

Wonderful numbers for a newly diagnosed kitty. I see you changed to an all wet food right away. What was she eating before? Sometimes a change to a low carb wet food can make a BIG difference in the glucose readings. This is very exciting.

For sure get a test before the normal time for the evening shot and post back with your number to determine whether or not it is safe to give a shot tonight.

Ok. Cool. She always ate FF, but probably only half a can a day. She was on an indoor dry. Because she's so chubby and it probably made it worse. What numbers am I looking for to give her the injection? Over 150?

Since you are just beginning testing you should not shoot at under 200. If you get a reading under 200. stall...without feeding...and retest in 20 minutes to see which way the readings are going. And please post with your preshot number before giving a shot.
