ok, so i looked all over town to find the merricks food for simba and now he doesnt like it lol. go figure! i knew this was gonna be hard.

but my question is this..do i take away the dry food completely? i dont want him to starve if he wont eat the canned.
do i attempt to try all d/f flavors tonight? or try another flavor tomorrow.

i still have our the prescription m/d food the vet gave us...but i have it mixed in w/his old purina food. he is ONLY eating the kibles from the purina. he is sifting thru and them pulling the purina out to the floor and eating that. if he pulls the other food on accident he leaves it on the floor. he is smart...that little devil lol.

so any advice? how long do i let the canned food sit out?

sorry if these are dumb questions but this canned stuff is new to me.

thanks
michelle and simba

You can try some other flavors to see if he is interested. But if he absolutely refuses to eat the wet, the you let him eat what he's willing to eat. Don't cave to easy  But you don't want to want him to not eat.

Merrick has been hit and miss with my cats. The Grammy's Pot Pie, Turducken, and Cowboy Cookout are the only ones I get and they are a little on the higher side of the good range carbs so I give them to the other cats and just let Smokey cats a snack of leftovers. Smokey doesn't really care for any but Cowboy Cookout she'll lick. Tiger likes them all, Avie licks the oil off of any of them, Mitts won't touch any of them and Taz hates CC, but will go through walls to get to Turducken or Grammy's Pot Pie. Their Before Grain line, everyone but Mitts loves Turkey, Chicken I can get 3 of them to eat usually, the rest I only add in occasionally or it doesn't get eaten.

I received some pretty nasty glares from Smokey when I took her beloved SD HB light away from her. But she loved to eat too much and caved in and ate the other stuff. My other oldest had been trying to convince us for 12 years that they should be fed wet food only so she was in heaven and P didn't care what she was fed as long as she was fed. Smokey still comes running when she hears me carry in a bag of food for the young ones in hopes its her long lost beloved.

None of my kitties like the cowboy cookout - the only merrick they like is the before grain beef and only as a snack not a meal
Maybe you could try some other brands - maybe Fancy Feast???

Good Luck and keep trying - it really does make a world of difference!!!

Yes, key in transitioning is finding something he likes if he doesn't like the merricks...some cats Hoover the canned food right away and some need to be eased into it. Bandit was a Hoover, so I was lucky.

Try some assorted fancy feast classics. A lot of cats love them. Right now getting him to eat any low carb food should be your goal if he's being picky. And don't starve him if he will only eat dry...but definitely stop free feeding the dry and do small frequent
meals like you would with canned. That's an important first step...getting them to have a more natural hunger drive.

It took me some time to transition Charlie from his tube feedings to canned food. I ended up going back to the store every couple days, buying a few different brands and flavors, and throwing away a lot of it. We finally ended up with Nature's Variety Instinct Raw (so far just chicken but we're going to try other flavors soon). If you have a store near you that sells it and want to give it a shot, here are a couple coupons:
