First BLUE since DX

I can't help but be elated at this. We changed Oliver to a wet only food diet last weekend and then after speaking with the vet upped his dose of insulin to 2.5 since we were seeing numbers in the 400s-500s. We got more strips in and I finally built up the nerve to test again today (I needed a break after the high numbers last weekend) and this mornings reading was lower than other mornings and at +4 I got a 155! He's jumped up and cuddled with me TWICE today which hasn't happened in I can't tell you how long. My heart is so happy to see some sense of my Oliver back. I know now that we need to check more often in the morning and evening pre-shot to make sure his dose won't need to come down, but YAY!!

Congratulations! I completely understand. Celebrate every little positive thing! :joyful: Mia has been in the blue for over 15 hours straight (with one green thrown in), and I am thrilled (though a little anxious because I know it will end, and I will feel so disappointed.)

I do not want to put a damper on your joy AT ALL, but you may want to get more mid-cycle readings (and definitely always a pre-shot) so you can have a clearer picture of what is going on. I have been struggling with Mia being 'bouncy'. Big drops like that (more than 50% less than pre-shot) can trigger a bounce. So, if you see a higher than expected number later, do not 'freak out'. Maybe you will not, but with what I have been dealing with, I just wanted to make you aware in case you have the same happen.

Yes, we weren't testing partly bc we ran out of strips and partly bc I needed a break. The other thing is he ate at like 4:30 this morning and I tested at 6 am so I know it could have affected it, but there was no way I was listening to him wine until 6am! I am going to try and get a +6 and then will get one before dinner with picking his food up 2 hrs prior and hope it's more "accurate" and then test again and +4 this evening. But over this last week we have noticed a small improvement in his behavior so it's been promising, much better thanast weekend.

The best! Definitely gives me a renewed feeling of hope for the future. Our baby will here next month so I just want Oliver in a good spot regulated! He's already lost a little weight and is showing signs of normalcy so I hope we can get there now!
 
Well.. 2 hours later we are at 342.. Womp Womp.

I did give him more food after his +4 so I'm assuming that may having something to do with it?

The food will raise it.... But it's probably a bounce. His body isn't used to the blue numbers yet.... Just keep going and hopefully the bouncing will settle soon. :)

Would you say his evening numbers are more stable with his current dose? I feel like when we are home he snacks on his grazing food later in the day which could be affecting things.
 
So we got another Blue tonight at +3 after a Red before dinner. Is it possible that his body is still adjusting to the right dose of insulin? After he ate he seemed very lethargic and lazy, unable to lay still kept relocating and laying down so I decided to test and Boom 149 after a 432 earlier. We've given him his "treats" and put his grazing food out for the night. I know he will wake me up at 3 or 4 hungry and I will try and get a reading then since he more than likely won't be able to wait until 6am to eat which screws up testing.
 
sounds good if you can see which direction he is heading.....

and since this is all new for him, most of us here would love it if you could set an alarm and check him again before am shot time.

I would check him in the AM before shot time, but he has been waking us up about an hour and a half before he due for breakfast so it's like 3:30 or 4:30 am. I get up for work at 6am which is his meal time so in order to sleep we've have to give in and give 1/4 can to hold him over and stop the whining. That being said I haven't tested bc I didn't think it would be accurate.
 
For my guy low carb does nothing--it has to be at least 15% to move numbers and he is a master diver:banghead:

All data is good data:)

I agree that it is important to see if he is going North or South:cat:

Even if the pre shot isn't 100% accurate it is important to make sure it is safe to shoot-once you know how he spikes from food you can figure that in the number ....

When he's hungry he is either vocal or he sits and stares at you in a very creepy way. Lol His high carb food is 18% so it obviously did the trick.

He is at 287 now. He at at least hang the food we put out so now I know he will be up begging for more at 3 something.

Kudos to you on those nice blue numbers. Let's hope they continue. And if they don't, then some more insulin increases to get your kitteh regulated. Oliver looks like a sweet kitteh.
 
Not sure how to tag everyone, but I got a 78 this morning (he was super stressed and I lost a test strip) , so I shouldn't give him anything right?! Help!

You could wait 20 min without feeding and see what the number is, but that's not really a boarderline number.

It night go a little higher tonight, but that's OK. I also feel you need to reduce insulin. That was way too steep of a curve yesterday. I let the ProZinc experts advise on future doses, but it looks like you are going to want to reduce the dose a bit. So glad you were testing and didn't blindly shoot 2.5! That could have been disastrous.

His snack is just the other 1/2 can of his breakfast. I only use the DX food as treats (a couple pieces here and there). Today I touchbase with the Vet again to discuss where we are. He's been all over the board. I need to order Lancets as I think I only have 3 left.

Another random question, but is it safe to assume the strips for his meter are okay? Ordered from trusted seller on Amazon and they are the right ones. Also, he's been off the Dry for over a week now so maybe that could have something to do with his numbers?

I'm sure the strips are fine. I've ordered them from Amazon several times with no problem. You can get the strips slightly cheaper on Adwdiabetes.com with a$5 off coupon code (which they always have)... Free tax and shipping.

Getting of dry will definitely have an impact. If it were my cat I would go to 2 units. Lowering will help prevent bouncing and hopefully get the preshots to lower.

BTW you can get lancets really cheap on Adwdiabetes.com as well. The ones I get on the are $1.13 for 100.

Oh wow! I only have 3 lancets left so this time I might have to get them from the vet since I dropped the ball. What's the brand you purchase from there? I am guessing the vet is going to want to lower it and I agree. How cool would it be if tonight I tested and it was still low?! Fingers crossed.
 
Well we discovered today that our Dog is in fact eating Oliver's food during the day after we leave. We bought a baby gate that had a pet door and our 40lb dog is making himself fit through the gate and scarfing up all of his food that we leave out for him and that is why he is starving when we get home. I am hoping this isn't the only reason Oliver's number has been getting better.

In other news the vet said she is happy with the progress she has seen and as long as he is eating first it's still safe to give him the 2.5 dose when he is above 200, but if he is below to give him 1/2. What are your thoughts?

Poor Oliver! :( (That is sorta funny though... silly dog.) How did you bust him? Camera?

Well today we came home and his bowl was literally licked clean with NO remnants which was odd. We let the dog in through the back door behind the gate where Oliver's area is and then left him back there. Then we waited to see if he could get out and sure enough he wiggled his butt through! My husband made the opening smaller and tried to get him to go through again but he just whimpered so as long as he doesn't jump over we should be good!

Oliver was literally whining from starvation today so he ate a little early and is # jumped back to 364.
 
Establish a no-dose limit. When Leo is 199 or below, I do not dose him. If he is close, I feed him then test him 2 hours later and give a mini-dose. But I've been doing diabetes control for over 2 years.

If you do not dose, then your kitteh will not hypo - as others have said.
If you do dose, and the BG is already low, that is a potential cause for a hypo.

You are doing good. This whole deal with insulin and blood sugar is a big learning curve.

Thanks. I think I am going to continue to go with what my vet said yesterday unless I start seeing a trend of lower or too low numbers.

Under 100- no insulin
100-200 half 1.5
above 200- normal 2.5
