I've started testing Louie today to plot his curve and I'm testing every 2 hours as requested by the Royal Veterinary College as part of the trial. I have no idea what to expect from the numbers but the first test after his AMPS went a bit wrong and he got stressed. I put some aloe vera gel on his ear to try and calm it down afterwards. I've just done the +4 test and his BG has gone right down, not complaining but could the aloe vera gel on his ear reduced it at all because it's actimg a bit like a barrier cream and was still visible when I did the test? I know it lowers BG internally if drunk.

Thanks Becky

Hi Becky,

I've no idea whether the film of aloe vera might have interfered with the test result.

Do you have any Vaseline petroleum jelly? If yes, smear a very thin film over Louie's other ear, wipe off the excess and do another BG test in the normal way. Tip: use your thumb and index finger to apply light but firm pressure to the test site for about 10-15 seconds after the test to stop the blood flow and reduce chance of any bruising. Post the result of the test when you get it.

Is he taking the RVC trial medication at the moment?

(I recognise that it's a double-blind trial so there's no way of knowing for certain whether Louie's getting the exanatide or placebo but the possibility that he might be receiving the drug needs to be taken into consideration when looking at his test data; members replying to your posts need to know that it might not be just the Caninsulin having an effect on Louie's numbers.)

Hi Mogs

Hubby has just gone out to get some Vaseline. But need to test again in 15 minutes so that one will probably be without Vaseline. He had his first injection of the drug/placebo last week and he was swapped to Prozinc which he seems a lot better on. Much more alert and playful. Still wants to eat like a horse but we're giving small snacks during the day and feeding him no more than he should be given. Still waiting for his IGF-1 result to see if he's acro. If he is in very pleased with his +4 result

Are you sill using the Clearsens human meter, Becky?

Maybe +4 is just the nadir. I can't be of much help because I'm not familiar with Prozinc. Hopefully members with experience in that insulin will be able to give you some feedback. If don't get much in the way of replies here start a new thread on the Prozinc/PZI board asking for help and add a link to this thread to save you typing everything again. :)

Thank you both. The +8 was 16.6 so does look like the aloe vera didn't cause any problems. Used Vaseline for the +8 and it was much easier.

Yes I'm still using the Clearsens human meter Mogs. I have an AT2 one coming tomorrow. Got a second hand one from someone on EBay whose dog was diagnosed with Cushing's just after buying it. Comes with 80 strips as well which is brilliant. I'll do another curve next week and compare them. The vet at the RVC wanted me to wait to do one until now presumably so that the insulin, and if he's getting the Exanatide rather than the placebo, could get established in his system.

Thanks for the Prozinc info Kris I'd geared myself up for it being in the middle of the 2 doses ie around +6 but I guess that's why you need to do a curve doh! Lol

Yes, a curve is the key! :)
