I just took Kate's first BG reading after 8,000,000 tries with the stupid lancet thing and it was 525!! She did just eat... but HOLY MOLY!! I haven't switched her food yet. I'm totally wigging out. My poor baby...no wonder she feels bad and peeing everywhere.

What should I do?

Is Kate on insulin yet? If so how much and what insulin?
When beginning, a high number like that is not that abnormal. Some caretakers even get Hi, which typically means >600

How big are the lancets, and have you tried doing the poke without the device, just free handing the lancet? That might make it easier. After a lot of unsuccessful tries, it's possible that Kate's stress level raised her numbers some.
Don't freak out over just one number. All it is is one snapshot of her BG at that exact moment in time.

This is where we tell you to "BREATHE", I think. ;-)

No. Kate is not on insulin yet. I was going to try changing her diet first b/c her fructosamine test wasn't horrible. She did *just* eat Friskies w/ gravy, which I know isn't a good food, but I haven't changed it yet. I was going to get the Blue Buffalo Wilderness food since it was so low in carbs.

ohmygod_smile Yes, I had to calm myself down. The lancets are a 30g. Those are the only one's that were available at the moment. I tried like 4 times last night and then this times was only 2. I held my phone under her ear to find the best vein and then lined up the lancet and it worked, thank heavens. She doesn't act stressed. *I'M* stressed... , but she's pretty chill. I think I am going to go get her food and then test her several times tomorrow. Mainly after she's been fasting. Good Lord... I worry so much about my baby. I've had her 10 years since she was a baby.

If you haven't started insulin yet, then changing food first is a great idea. It should bring her numbers down, and hopefully lower her insulin needs. I totally understand your anxiety. We all worry about our babies, well, like they're our babies.

Hi,
I just looked up the friskies and gravies. That's what my girl ate before diagnosis.
They are all 12, 13 % carbs. Having just eaten that could very well raise numbers.

Of the friskies canned, Flaked with tuna and egg in sauce is 5%, Special diet beef and chicken entree is 4%, special diet beef and liver entree is 4% , Special diet ocean whitefish dinner is 3% and Special diet Turkey and giblets dinner is 5%.

If you don't already have the links to the food lists, ask....

I would keep practicing at the home testing and start looking over the lists to find the foods.
I have a shortcut grocery list for starters if you would like me to share. all 5% or less.

Save the gravies for your hypo kit so you are prepared in case of emergency.

Thank you!! I do have the links to lots of the food lists. I know it's a little more pricey, but I think I am going to get the Blue Buffalo Wilderness. From what I have seen the carbs are .5%. I will keep her on that until we get this under control, then maybe graduate up to the Fancy Feast Classics.

Congratulations on getting your first test  You're going to find it a lot easier when you get the right size lancet. 30 is a bit too fine. I used 28s in a lancing device for Vyktor but if you are just starting out and going freehand you may want something a little larger (the lower the number the thicker the lance).

Please change her food ASAP so you can see how she goes for a few days and then, most likely, get her onto insulin the less time she spends in high numbers the less damage to her organs and the greater the chance that her pancreas will be able to heal and she can achieve remission. I would recommend lantus insulin as it has the highest rates of remission.

I am happy to report, ok, not happy, but feel better, that I tested Kate's BG at 5am (thanks to Myra - the black bouncy ball of a lab I have that was barking up a storm) and it was 332. So a drop of almost 200 points!! Now I did have to feed her the friskies gravy then, but no worries, I am going to petsmart as SOON as they open at 10am and buying my Katekate her new food so I can stop feeding her what I feel like is poison. Hopefully by switching her foods, her BG will go down ever further and we can level out at an acceptable level. No worries, I have my hypoglycemia kit ready and waiting just in case.

Now i'm going *back* to bed after tossing the dogs outside... Kidding... they are outside, but in a fenced in backyard probably playing and waking the dead out there... but not in my house!

She can't hypo unless she is ODed on insulin :-D So don't worry about that (yet). Hope the low carb brings her down some.

No worries, those high numbers should come down with her food change!

I know you are going to try out the food from petsmart but we (along with several others) use special kitty from wal mart .. mocha goes crazy over the turkey and giblets can and I do believe that runs at 3 or 4% .. plus, it's super cheap, .43 for a 5.5oz can! We buy them by the cases

Good luck in getting your kitties numbers down!

Yes, I went this weekend and got Kate the Blue Wilderness canned foods that have only .5% carbs (i think) and her number looks MUCH better. I got a true fasting test on her this afternoon and it was 240!!! Yay!!! but... sneaky little heffer, I think she just scarfed some of Shadow's food so I think her sugar will be higher when I test later. ohmygod_smile I feel like I'm starving Shadow b/c I take his food up when he walks away. Kate will eat all of hers in one sitting but apparently he grazes. And of course, when he scarfs his down b/c he starving to death, he immediately throws up. Lord... getting them on the same schedule is going to test my wherewithall. I tried to put some of his on the top of the washing machine b/c Kate can't get up there. I have a really tall washer/dryer combo... the front loaders on pedestals. Shadow also still likes the dry food over the wet food. He *always* pukes up the wet stuff.
