Financial Aid?

Hello fellow feline lovers,

I am new to this type of discussion, but need to dive right in. My 13 year old Bombay was diagnosed with diabetes 2 months ago. It's been a rough go . . . It was actually my sister who took him to the vet (she insisted) because she was concerned about his overall health. Now the diagnosis is causing financial hardship. I've only taken Bug to the vet once, when I first adopted him. Literally living paycheck-to-paycheck, the added burden of the vet visits, insulin/hypos and higher quality food have me seriously considering having to put him down. Such a sad thought, but it has to be a reality at this point.

So, my question is, are there any financial support organizations for feline diabetes?

So sorry Chris. Here is one dedicated to diabetic cats. Send them a message. They are really great. And if you really can't manage, they will help rehome. There are many people out there who will adopt diabetic kitties.

Please check with the individual organization. Each organization has their own set of rules, requirements, and policies. Most organizations rely on donations to fund their financial aid programs. Be aware if funds are not available organizations may temporarily close financial aid programs.

Hi Chris. There are ways to economically care for a diabetic cat.

1. Food - you do not need to feed him prescription food if that is what your vet prescribed. Many of us feed our cats either Friskies or Fancy Feast canned food. You want to feed pate flavors since they are lower in carbs. Almost all set foods, including prescription, are high in carbs.

2. Insulin - what insulin are you using? If it is Lantus or Levimer, ask your vet for prescription for pens instead of vials. Depending on your dose, one pack of pens could last 9 months or more.

3. Home testing - by testing Bombay' s glucose before every shot you will know how well the dose is working and if a change is needed. This also eliminates unnecessary trips to the vet just for testing. You can use a human glucose meter for testing. If you have a Walmart near you their Relion brand meters are very good and inexpensive to use. We can help you learn how to test.
