Even though his preshots are still high, his nadirs are at the right point in the cycle. That means the dose is close and if you hold it for a few more cycles he might drop further, so I'd rather see you hold this dose than change it just yet. The problem is if you raise it too soon, he might start bouncing again.

Looking good!

Do you mean the .75u back in feb 2010? it's true he did well then, but when i tried that same dose more recently,
he had mostly purple and yellows...do you think i should try again? he was doing well at 1 u, but it doesnt stick,
he's now gradually going up in #'s. where to go from here?

No, I meant early July this year. He had some nice greens then. He had a lot of greens on 1.25u, but many of them were too low and caused bouncing. I just keep thinking about B eau and the time I was stuck going back and forth from .4u to .5u because .5u was clearly too much, but .4u didn't seem to be enough. Turns out it was also too much, but not enough too much to cause the lows, just the high, flat numbers.

So, with Buddy, I think that 1.25u is clearly too much and I wonder if 1u, or even .75u, is still too much, just not enough to cause low, lows?

Back in Feb of 2010 he did very well on .75 and also on .5u and .25u. Seems like you got him down to .25u and after a few days you thought his numbers were coming up so you raised him three times up to 1u in 12 days and his numbers kept getting higher. Then you went to 1.25 and started having to feed some very low numbers.

What do you think about trying .5u again? I know doses change over time, but what if something like .4u is the ideal dose?

Ok so i 'll do the .5 but then you said what if .4 is the ideal dose...which 1 to start?
also, i am opening up a new vile tonight-i think this one may have pooped out-
better to wait a few days because of new vial, right?

I should probably let Sheila answer that.

As far as the new pen (you're using vials?), it's usually a good idea to get some spot checks in when starting a new pen to see if a dose adjustment will be needed. That doesn't mean you change the dose when starting, it just means you watch what the BGs do. There's always a possibility of a response different than the previous pen.
So if you're thinking of a major dose decrease like Sheila is suggesting, see what the new insulin does before decreasing. I think that's what you're asking?

Well, new vials tend to be more potent, I think, so you might want to drop the dose when you start it.

I would start with .5u because that is easy to draw. Let it settle - maybe for a week, do a curve, get spot checks. Then we can look at what is happening and see if there is still a little bouncing or not. Go from there. Sound like a plan?
