Finally Have Insulin...Now What?

Hello everyone!

So the new vet was a great hit with my father and myself. She did research, gave us the script for the Lantus SoloStar which we picked up late today (it's hanging out, unopened in the fridge.) I'm starting Shiro on it tomorrow morning. I'm a little nervous! I did okay with the practice shot, missed a huge air bubble =w= but it wasn't nearly NEARLY as bad as I thought.

Now, I was wondering. I've read conflicting information. I know the Lantus SoloStar should be refrigerated before it's been opened. But what about after? I've read some people keep it in the fridge all the time, and others who say you shouldn't put it in the fridge once it's been opened. I know you aren't supposed to be too harsh with the vials but how much movement can the pen tolerate? I know that I should hold the syringe for a while to keep the insulin from being super cold when I inject him...but what do I do after? How long is too long to warm?

Shiro's appetite has really decreased in the last few days. The parmesean trick worked for a while and i've ordered some Bonito flakes (they won't get here till thursday grr!). I was going to order some FortiFlora but he's on Atopica, which is an immune-suppressant, for his Stomatitis. Apparently you aren't supposed to give Fortiflora to immuno-suppressed cats.

I think all these questions must just be the pre-show jitters.
 
Yes. Keep it in the fridge. Some vets/the Lantus box will tell you it only lasts 28 days - that is true if you keep it at room temperature, unrefrigerated. Humans use large enough doses so that isn't a problem - but since our cats use such little amounts, it would go bad faster than we could use it all. It should last 3-4 months in the fridge, maybe more. Don't inject cold insulin though, it stings. Draw the insulin into the syringe and then hold the syringe where the insulin is between your fingers for about 20-30 seconds to warm it up.

If I can do insulin shots based only on watching the videos people referred to (and a few others that were on YouTube) you can do it, too! In 4 cycles I haven't given a single fur shot, nor have I shot myself by accident. I consider that a great accomplishment. *LOL*

I am so relieved to hear that the vet was a hit with your father; when you trust the professional, you are more likely to go along with that professional's advice.

Great to hear you have the Lantus and ready to go! Before too long, you are going to see a happier and healthier cat which should be terrific proof to your father that the vet's advice was sound.

When you are ready to start with the insulin, have your testing equipment ready, and also have your insulin and syringe handy.
Post online here and see who's around to help you with the first shot, just in case you have last minute questions or any kind. There is always someone around, so just ask... just make your subject 'eye catching' and mention giving first shot and need help now.

You and Shiro will be just fine.
