Feral TNR Kitties - aftercare for spay/neuter?

Hello cat people! Long time, no see! For those of you who remember me and Buster all is well in Busterland! He is well regulated and a snuggly purry happy boy!

However, all is not well at my friend's house. She has a feral cat colony that moved into her neighborhood. I am encouraging her to try TNR, but they are telling her there will be 7-10 days of aftercare following the spay/neuter portion of the project. Is it common for there to be an aftercare period in these situations? Only one of the 5 cats really seems friendly enough to be able to pill so we're not sure we can sustain a medication regimen. What about Covenia for ferals (yes, I know the risks). Weather is great in AZ, so we think we can just crate them and have them in her garage for a spell until they are healed up. Any advice?

I keep males 24 hours post-surgery, and females up to 3 days post-surgery. The extra antibiotics are optional but I would do them if you think there's some reason you may not be able to hold on to the females for a couple days until the soluble stitches/glue heals up. I had one male once who absolutely refused to eat post-surgery. That sucked but is unusual. I had to let him out a little early but tracked him for the next week or so and he was fine.
 
I agree with the above. I used to help out with TNR (in the Phoenix area) and if we could, I would try and hold them for a day or two but then would released them. There would not be any medication needed afterwards.
 
I've never heard of 7-10 days, but more in the realm of what others are saying. A day or two for males and a little longer for females. You want to make sure their body temps are regulating normally again and that the females aren't going to have problems with their incision site.
 
I never heard of that either. I have trapped a lot of ferals to have them fixed and they normally can be released the next day. The only ferals I keep are kittens because I socialize them to get them adopted.
 
Thanks everyone! I thought 7-10 days seemed strange for ferals. My friend can keep them/feed them in her garage for a few days. We were just worried about pilling - ugh! One of those little guys would take a finger or two, I'm sure!
 
I have never had an issue with pain for the ferals that I fixed. The only thing is to make sure there is no infection. I did have one kitten that did have an infection where she was spayed. Fortunately since I had already started handling them to socialize them, I was able to find it early.
