Fellow canadians recommend a good treat for dental?

Ive been looking into getting a good treat for my kitty to help keep her teeth clean. Since shes now a wet food only baby all i seem to hear from people are " WHAT ABOUT HER TEETH! DRY FOOD HELPS CLEAN THEIR TEETH! witch im sure the science of that isnt 100% proven. I do have a little finger tooth brush that i try and give her a good brushing before she explodes out of my arms. Any suggestions on a treat that maybe a bit more specific towards teeth that is suitable for a now in remission diabetic kitty? of course none of these treats get specific on sugar content... also today I learned that there are dental sticks for cats!? i had no idea? anyone try these?

PS ive only singled out canadians as i know there is food and treats that are ONLY american and i just wanted to narrow down my search. thanks
 
There is no scientific proof that dry food does anything to keep kitty's teeth clean. That is an urban myth perpetrated by the food manufacturers to give us humans yet another reason to buy their products. Your best bet is to keep trying to get Zoe to allow you to brush her teeth.

As for treats, I don't know of any "crunchy" ones that would be appropriate for a diabetic cat. Most of us use freeze dried treats like PureBites. In Canada you can also get VitaLife and PureSnacks at Walmart in the dog section which are considerably less expensive than Purebites. You can just break up the bigger dog pieces into cat size treats. There are also Orijen treats that some folks use available at pet stores.

I think some folks give their cats gizzards to chew on but whether that really helps remove tartar build up on teeth or not, I have no idea.
 
I'll second the urban myth idea, a total scam. Our previous dog lived for Greenies, never had an extraction in 12 years. I haven't seen any for cats but I'm almost certain they're made in Kansas and don't sit in a warehouse in China for 3 years before they're shipped "fresh to you".
 
This is going to sound like a stupid question, but what is Freeze dried treats? when i hear this i think of fresh food thats been frozen? Zoe is about 10 and since the whole diabetes scare ive been trying to make it my mission that she never ever goes back. Ive gotten a little nervous hearing gum disease can kickstart the diabetes again. about a year before her diagnoses the vet did say once that shes got quite a bit of build up. like i said in my original post i got a lil finger tooth brush that i try and give her a cleaning. unfortunately she makes it impossible and i can maybe get 10-15 seconds in before she loses her mind. reading that a vet will do teeth cleanings but the prices look insane to me. Im not applying any toothpaste or anything. since ive started the finger brush i do notice the brown color closest to her teeth have gone away. just want to save her from diabetes and expensive vet visits!
 
My vet was telling me from her last development seminar on cats teeth is that:

1) 75% will develop lesions after 10 years old.
2) Most absorption/lesion issues can not be seen on physical exam only with xray. So any dental should include xrays.
3) It does not matter if they eat dry or wet food. There has been no data that backs one way of eating from another.

The basic advise was to brush (yeah, like my skin the way it is) and get yearly cleanings. Just like we do, go figure.

Freeze dried is raw meat that has been frozen till all the moisture has been taken out.
 
Recently found out my kitty has some gingivitis. I am looking at getting a water additive that is supposed to help with dental issues. I don't know if it works or not, but the kind I am getting is odorless and tasteless. (Oxyfresh Premium Pet Dental Care Solution) I'm in the US, but there might be a similar product in Canada you could look into maybe?
