Felix - Vet Visit

Hello everyone,

I just picked up Felix from the vet's office. He got seven extractions today . The vet looked at his chart and told me to stop giving insulin. She said that his numbers are so good that it doesn't warrant giving him any insulin at this point. She would like me to continue testing and bring the log to the office next Friday so she can see how he did a whole week without insulin. If, in the event his numbers sky rocket, then we will start up with insulin again.

What does the forum think about that?

hi sandy! i think that's a good choice. it's highly likely the dental situation brought him out of remission, he was down to a miniscule dose, and now you've resolved the teeth issue. poor guy - 7 extractions! ouch. punkin had to have 3 last march - that's no fun.

i would keep checking once a day before breakfast and see how he does this week.

after anesthesia, we encourage people to just give a teaspoon of food and wait 30 minutes before giving another tiny bit. you don't want "scarf and barf" and after anesthesia their gut can be slowed down.

hope his recovery goes well. keep in touch!

Sandy --

Did the vet give you pain meds for Felix? That's a lot of extractions. He may not be terribly comfortable eating for a day. You may want to see if baby food (either Gerber Stage 2 or Beechnut -- the kinds that are only meat and broth -- no onion or veggies) will be easier for Felix to eat. Also, did the vet get post-procedure x-rays? It's important to make sure there are no remaining roots.

If you want to make a try without insulin, I'd suggest testing at your usual AM and PMPS times. I'm a little leery of stopping given Felix's +4 today. However, there can be any number of reasons for that higher number. I would just encourage you to stay on top of the numbers so you don't get caught by surprise. If Felix stays in normal numbers (i.e., below 120) for 2 weeks, he's officially OTJ.

Hi,

Thank you all for wishing a speedy recovery. My poor baby, he doesn't look good right now.

Well thanks to this forum, I requested buprenorphine for pain meds. He is also taking Clindrops as an antibiotic.

I haven't tested him yet because we just had such an ordeal trying to administer the meds just a bit ago. He freaked out that we were shooting liquid into his mouth. I think I will give him a rest and test him shortly. If he is high, it is probably due to pain (I hope so anyway).

I wasn't expecting that he have seven extractions today. They said they went ahead and did it because he is diabetic and they didn't want us to have to come back later for more extractions. BIG ouch!
