Feeling a little sad today

Smokey is at the vet getting his work up and I'm missing him like crazy. I can't wait to bring him home. It will be nice to finally get the insulin and get him started. I just hope it won't hurt him too much, not looking forward to sticking him with needles every day because he won't understand it. Feeling a bit nervous to finally get started because I have no idea what is going to happen and how he will react. nailbite_smile

Have plenty of high protein treats for your cat and it won't be as bad for Smokey. Get some treats for you too.

Awwwww i feel your pain! I'm due to leave for 7 days tomorrow and have to leave my Leo with my parents, it's going to be a very stressful time.....for me.

At first i was shooting Leo when he ate breakfast and supper, but now he's onto me and won't cooperate anymore. So now i shoot when he's sleeping or just hanging out then feed him.....and he doesn't notice. Plus the one thing i've noticed is, he does not like being injected with cold insulin and will be very vocal about not liking it! So i make sure to warm it up in my hands before injecting and warm insulin = happy kitty!

Good Luck!

Hi Sara, and, of course, you too, sweet Smokey,

It's understandable that you're nervous. Dealing with sharp objects can seem daunting at first... But, you'll get the hang of it, I promise. And, this is coming from a life-long needle-phobic who practiced shooting a hot pad after my first few shaky shots with Giz way back when... Lovely people here suggested practicing shooting oranges, but I kept eating them... And, that old hot pad bore a remarkable resemblance to Gizzie's scruff when tented... Took a couple of weeks of shooting that hot pad twice daily before I noticed a calm, smooth, and quick approach shooting Giz... (Of course, the hot pad was on honeymoon by then...)

Underdawg is right about treats for Smokey. Underdawg is also right about treats for you!

Love and encouraging, it will be okay, kind of hugs for you and your sweet Smokey,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

Just called the vet and the assistant said that Smokey seemed to be doing well. He hasn't protested at all being poked and seemed to be comfortable. I'm impatiently waiting the call to bring him home.

This is difficult to believe, I know. But those tiny insulin needles (30 or 31 gauge), really
don't hurt !!! Not even as much as a flea bite !.

After drawing the insulin into the syringe, return the vial or cartridge to the refrigerator, then
hold the syringe (the part with the insulin in it), between your fingers to warm it up a bit
and that helps a lot. Like said before, COLD insulin is felt more than the poke itself.

Also, again WHERE ARE YOU .... (city, state). Lori ( & Tom) is holding a newbie kit for
you, she thinks, but needs confirmation that it is you.

Sara hard as it may be to believe this now...I think like almost every single one of us you will come to see the diabetes as a gift.
I know that sounds absolutely crazy...but everyone of us has formed a bond like we never knew possible with our sugar kitties.
The Saddness and Pain turn into a deeper love and ability to care for than you knew you had. And if will likely change the relationship you have with every other animal you have or will have in your life.
I think the Dire Beasties (as tom and I call them) has been a gift for us both. It has also brought me this community of friends who are a very very special breed of people. Amoung the finest you'll meet anywhere.
Waiting eagerly for Smokey to get home
And have you gotten or ordered a newbie kit?
You just have to have one ok.
Lori

Sara, and Smokey too,

I hope you're having a better day today. I'm just a few days behind you in the "shooting" game. Alex is not thrilled with the shot--not sure why as I don't think there's any pain involved. I just think he doesn't want to be disturbed while he's try to focus on the food.

We can do this!!!!
