The Gabapentin I gave vlad last night for his tooth pain seemed to make him high as hell. He didn't want to do anything except lay down and gaze into eternity, or sleep. He is active again this morning now that it's worn off.
For the infection he's on an oral Amoxi/Clavulanate/K Suspension, 0.5 ml twice daily starting last night.
Upon closer inspection this morning, it looks to me like he has at least 3 pretty bad teeth that will need to be removed, they look quite nasty, definitely infected looking. Because his appetite has been so poor (now I realize due to his teeth most likely) he has lost a lot of weight and is skin and bones. Doc is worried about putting under a 16 year old cat with active infections, diabetes, and who is so thin (5.6 lbs). So she wants him on the antibiotics until this coming Wednesday to try and improve his condition if possible, and then do a dental/extraction Wednesday morning to remove the offending teeth.
On the Gabapentin, he wasn't eating at all, or drinking, and when I gave him food he just held it in his mouth for a long time and stared into the heavens. Seemed like he was tripping or something, lol. Poor babe.
Because he's so thin, I'm not sure I want to use much more of the gabapentin if he's not going to eat on it. This morning, even with his painful mouth he's finally eaten about half a can of Fancy Feast (thank god), and now he's finally drinking some water on his own. I don't like syringe feeding him, it upsets him, and seems like it might hurt his mouth with the little plastic bit on his teeth/gums. But if thats what I have to do for the next 4 days, or longer, I guess he will have to deal with me doing that.
Doc warned me about the risks of the procedure at his age and his condition. But it seems like the risk of not doing it is just as bad, likely much worse.
His BG swings have been pretty wild as you can see from hit SS. One recommendation was to lower his dose from 4.4U to 3.5U of vetsulin. I'm a little worried about dropping him so quickly, I cut back to 4.2U this morning, and will observe. Wish me luck, and any sage advice is welcome. He's been through a lot, but he's been in remission once, and he got so much better, I'm hopeful he's got the fight in him to tackle this. And hopefully I sleep at some point so I can be a good steward. lol.
