Feeding Schedule?

Hi Guys,

I’m new to the site and I am currently slowly transitioning my cat Pebbles to a low carb diet. Since her diabetes diagnosis our vet has told us we can ONLY feed her twice a day. Looking at the feeding guides on a lot of the high protein/low carb foods, they’re very large amounts to be feeding each time. Pebbles will eat anything and is constantly looking for food so I know that if I feed these large portions of food only twice a day, she’ll eat them very quickly and vomit.

Do you feed your diabetic cat more than twice a day? Is this okay to do?
 
Since Dexter's diagnosis on 46 I first started him out eating meals twice a day but I found that he was so hungry and even looked depressed after searching for food. I started giving him a half a can of fancy feast classic 6 hours in the middle of his 12-hour larger meal.

I'm new to the diabetes diagnosis for my cat also and still learning a lot. You will get lots of great information and advice to help you through this time of transition.

We all feed our cats more than 2 times per day.
We feed the bigger meals at AMPS (morning feeding and PMPS ( Night time feeding)

Then what ever you have left over , how many cans are you feeding?
We then feed about 1 or 2 tables during the AM cycle maybe @+4 and @+6
Same for the night cycle

In your first post which I posted you said you were going to start home testing
have you yet?

Hi, I ended up getting a monitor very last minute this evening as I was extremely panicked by her vomiting after her insulin dose, so I have only managed to get a reading after vomiting and the insulin dose. The reading is 17.2 or if you are in the US I believe that coverts to 310 but I could be wrong.

unsure what to do with this reading as it’s high. I am also using a human monitor so I do know there can be a difference in the reading of that compared to one for animals

Hi, I think you have a Zooplus in Ireland to buy online from? So most of the foods in the first section on the UK list 'should' be available to you, and that could give you a lot more options. :)

Hi, thank you yes I’m in Ireland! We are currently using a brand of food not on zooplus to transition to which I have confirmed is low carb. I’ve also ordered some on the list from Zooplus :)

What food are you feeding



Our numbers are based on human meters, so that's good you are using a human meter

Hi thank you for replying I’m sorry I did not have a signature before now, I didn’t know what it was.

Yes, she is still on 10 units a day. My reason for wanting to start to change foods and home monitor is because I worry that 10 units is very high for a cat so small (4kg) we started on 1 unit x2 a day with weekly testing with her vet and fructosamine tests every 3 weeks. Her vet concluded that she should stay on 10 units and come back every 3 months for both tests.

We have been feeding pebbles royal Canin diabetes wet & dry food x2 a day as directed by her vet. After finding this site recently and learning about low carb high protein foods I have started to introduce a food called RealNature, I believe it’s only available in certain EU countries, but it’s lower than 2% carbs and over 10% protein.

please feel free to ask anymore information, I am trying to learn as much as I can to help Pebbles

Not true for Lantus. Maybe your vet is only familiar with the older in and out insulins? Almost all of us feed smaller more frequent meals.

Are you home testing her blood sugars yet? With a change in food, there could be a sudden need for less insulin. I would get comfortable with home testing before changing the food.

Is there any way you can get the numbers from your vet when the vet tested him
so you can enter them on a spreadsheet

I am going to contact the vet to see can i get the previous numbers, from what I recall, every vet visit they have been very high, well over 300 and the last vet visit he had mentioned the levels were starting to even out, that was with a fructosamine test, I will check to see what the numbers were when he had said they were starting to 'even out'.

I am creating a spreadsheet now, I am just trying to work out where I should be inputing the numbers to it

If you need help with the SS ask
The vet should have all the numbers for you, if you can try and get the last 2 or 3
weeks

The date, AMPS is where you put the reading of the test you take first thing in the morning
Units would be how many units you are giving

If you test +1 that means 1 hour after you gave insulin you would put it there
If you test +2 means 2 hours after you gave insulin you would put it there
And so on

Night time
PMPS. First test at night and so on

Thank you! that really helped me out with the sheet. Could I ask what Dosing Method (SLGS or TR) means?

Hi there! Yes, I have ordered some EU specific foods from that list. I have bought some food that we can get locally in a pet shop and have had some people on here double check the ingredients and carb levels are all good, so I think I will use that food for the transition to low carb/high protein :)

There are 2 different methods of dosing using Lantus and Levemir. One is Start Low, Go Slow (SLGS) and the other is Tight Regulation (TR)

At some point you'll need to choose which method you want to use (but you can switch if the one you start on doesn't work for you)

Here's information on both dosing methods. Feel free to ask questions if you have them!

Curious you gave Pebbles 5 units tonight after being on 10 units for over a year


Just a little info for you
Learn how YOUR kitty is responding to insulin:
  • Onset - the length of time before insulin reaches the bloodstream & begins lowering blood glucose
  • Peak/Nadir - the lowest point in the cycle
  • Duration - the length of time insulin continues to lower blood glucose
  • How to do a Curve - a simple explanation
