while on Bid Lantus shots the main-bigger meal should be given before a shot (after AMPS or PMPS are checked), or at nadir?

Most people give multiple small meals through out the day. I always feed at each shot time, and a few more between that. It is just important that cat does not eat 2 hours before AM and PM Pre Shot BG test as you don't want those BG numbers to be food influenced.

We typically will test, feed, then shoot. Many people shoot while their face is in the bowl. Smaller meals are given after preshot. Ideally you would feed very little carbs after mid cycle or nadir, because the insulin action is waning then and adding carbs at that time will limit the insulin duration, causing the numbers to zoom up in the last half of the cycle. When you feed is a bit of an experiment as to what works best for your cat. Neko got most of her food by +3 in the cycle. For kitties that like to dive early in the cycle, feeding more food just before onset can help.

Having said all that, some kitties are grazers and some are hoovers. Neko was a hoover so she had scheduled meals. Some kitties are grazers so people just leave food out. If your kitty is a grazer, try to lift the food bowl a couple hours before preshot test, so the preshot number is not influenced by the late cycle carbs.

Felix is definitely a hoover, always has scheduled meals, but now it has to be scheduled even more rationally and carefully I guess, so the insulin would be the most effective.

Our sugar baby has tummy issues if he goes too long without food, so we pick up 2 hours before AM and PM testing, feed a small meal then shoot. He grazes the rest of the time. I actually shoot while he is eating, instead of waiting otherwise by the time he is done with the "meal" it could be 45 minutes after his test lol.

Lol. It's so funny how different rhey all are. Felix eats so fast, that I don't even have enough time to draw the insulin from the bottle before he is all done with food :) what do you consider a small meal? Is 1/2 of 3oz can a small one?
