Feeding frenzy....on a schedule?

Dear friends, my question is simple (or not): Toronto was a freeloader for all his 16 years, with gravy canned and dry food as his discretion for 24 hours. A month ago that changed drastically for him, going into only low carb canned food.

As we've realized (wife and myself) that the food schedule is as important as the insulin dose, how are we supposed to feed him so the numbers will stay constant during 24 hours – and more important will not give us fake BG numbers AMPS/PMPS? Right now he’s getting 1 can AMPS, ½can@ +7 , PMPS 1 ½ can (for the whole night). He's not the one to eat everything immediately but to go and get few bites every hour or so. We make sure he’s not eating 2 hours before PS.

Thank you !!!

My Maggie was the same way with eating. I have continued to give small meals throughout the day, just not EVERY time she wants it. :D Feeding like this can keep a kitty's BG more level instead of bouncing. As long as you maintain the no feeding for 2 hrs. before PS you should get an accurate BG for the AM/PM injection.

I fed small amounts as often as Max wanted and fed the curve. The only rule I had was no food two hours before insulin. He too was a grazer prior to FD.

Marvin was the opposite, he used to gobble everything up within 5 minutes, since he was diagnosed or maybe it's because it's wet food now he is somewhat of a grazer. I too leave food overnight for him, but sometime like this morning, he probably ate within that 2 hours before shot time. I haven't found an automatic feeder for him yet. My plan is to use an auto feeder to make sure access to the food is stopped two hours before I get up and will do the same when I am back to work.

Fortunately - for now- I wake up few hours before AMPS so I can control these few hours...seems like is he's eating his whole food way earlier than that (this morning the food was gone 4.5 hours AMPS....a feeder would be nice, yes. Somehow he's more hungry during night when he does nothing........Thank you.

I use an auto feeder for daytime and nighttime and Boomer eats every 3 hours. Feeding small meals more frequently is easier on their pancreas and helps to keep their levels steady. Some people find that feeding all the calories in the first 6 hours of each cycle helps keep the momentum of the insulin.

I keep food out for Zeke cause he is a grazer. I have tried doing smaller frequent meals but quickly learned that he starts having a little tummy issues when he goes for too long without food (maybe acid reflux or similar?). So for him leaving food out all the time and just picking up 2 hours before PS's is best. Still get a little foamy vomit from time to time, but not as bad as when trying to do meals.
