Other than the test before shooting, do I always need to withhold food for 2 hours before a BG test? Maggie's on Lantus. She eats many small meals usually. I'm trying to get the BG levels over a curve, and sometimes she's ready to eat before 2 hours have expired.

Thanks for all your help!

No, you do not need to withhold food for 2 hours before a mid cycle test. The only time you don't want to feed is two hours before shot time. That way it will give you a non food influenced number before the insulin. Most of us feed small meals throughout the day. I always try to get the small meals in before the lowest point in the cycle (nadir).

Amanda answered your question about the midcycle tests and feeding.

I notice that on your ss you have recently made a switch to all wet LC, if you were feeding dry that was higher in carbs, just be aware that you can sometimes experience a significant drop in the BG once the HC dry has worked it's way out of the system.
Also I notice that you got a 75 when on the 1.5u, and a 50 on 1.25u (though depot of the 1.5u may have been responsible for this number), on your signature it says you are following SLGS, but yet you have gone back up to 1.5u, and though Maggie is looking good on the dose, in theory the guidelines for SLGS would have seen you hold the dose at 1.25u for at least a week, before deciding if that was too much of a reduction for her, with SLGS we are attempting to keep numbers above 90, usually because a kitty is on dryfood or CG is unable to monitor, it allows you to keep kitty safe by having them run at a slightly higher range.
That said if you are able to continue testing as you have been, and given that Maggie is on an all wet diet, perhaps you are thinking of changing to TR?? With TR we are looking to run the numbers a little lower, and would take reductions under 50. (though with that 75 and 50 being dry food influenced, even on TR I might wonder at how low this dose is now going to take Maggie)

The reason I am mentioning this is just to make you aware that if we combine the transition to a LC wet food diet and not taking a reduction as per the SLGS guidelines, could very well see Maggie run a little lower than you are comfortable with, I would certainly be vigilant over the next few days while you begin to see the effects of the transition to wet LC on her numbers, she may just throw you a surprise or two, regardless of which dosing strategy you want to move forward with.

Gill & George, thanks for the insight on the change from dry to wet food.

Yes, it scared me when I got the 75 and 50; dropped quicker than I expected, but then I increased when the BG was in the yellow. I work from home, so I can test frequently and watch her closely, so I really should do TR. I just need to trust the method and stick with it!

Maggie was draggy about an hour ago, so I tested thinking the BG must be low, but at +7 she was 236. Of course she has other health issues, so maybe something else is making her feel bad.

Thanks again!

FYI, the GA prefix means kitty has passed or Gone Ahead, Guardian Angel. Might want to change that.
