Hello,
My Samson was diagnosed with FD in the fall of 2005 when he was 5 1/2 years old. He was on Lantus for only a couple of months before he was "cured"!
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that Samson wasn't feeling well. I didn't see any typical signs of diabetes, but I had a gut feeling that it might be back. He went to the vet last week and had bloodwork done. He had a lot of fat in his blood, but no signs of fatty liver disease and his kidneys and pancreas looked good. However, his blood glucose level was 341. He had eaten breakfast a couple hours earlier. I still have all of his supplies, so I went out over the weekend to get new test strips (his were long expired!). I tested him this morning before breakfast and he was at 308. After work he was at 342. I called the vet and got him a new prescription for Lantus. 1 unit twice a day and then do a curve in a couple of weeks.
I am not looking forward to doing this again. I know I need to get new food. He has been on Natures Variety Instinct dry for a while now. I was feeding Friskies canned for a few of years after the original diagnosis. I have three cats and it is so much easier to give them dry food (I know, I know... cats aren't meant to eat dry food!). I'd like to try a homemade recipe for them. Where can I find a good, easy recipe? I don't want to spend a lot of money on canned food.
Thanks everyone!
