Hello,

My Samson was diagnosed with FD in the fall of 2005 when he was 5 1/2 years old. He was on Lantus for only a couple of months before he was "cured"!

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that Samson wasn't feeling well. I didn't see any typical signs of diabetes, but I had a gut feeling that it might be back. He went to the vet last week and had bloodwork done. He had a lot of fat in his blood, but no signs of fatty liver disease and his kidneys and pancreas looked good. However, his blood glucose level was 341. He had eaten breakfast a couple hours earlier. I still have all of his supplies, so I went out over the weekend to get new test strips (his were long expired!). I tested him this morning before breakfast and he was at 308. After work he was at 342. I called the vet and got him a new prescription for Lantus. 1 unit twice a day and then do a curve in a couple of weeks.

I am not looking forward to doing this again. I know I need to get new food. He has been on Natures Variety Instinct dry for a while now. I was feeding Friskies canned for a few of years after the original diagnosis. I have three cats and it is so much easier to give them dry food (I know, I know... cats aren't meant to eat dry food!). I'd like to try a homemade recipe for them. Where can I find a good, easy recipe? I don't want to spend a lot of money on canned food.

Thanks everyone!
Kait

Re: returning to the life of a diabetic cat

Some of us use Dr. Lisa's raw recipe off of her site-
http://www.catinfo.org/

For me, it comes out to 40 cents per meal- or less. It depends on if you have access to a grinder or not. I am using a grinding attachment for an old mixer- but it does the job.

There are others out there who get a powder to mix in with their meat for the same effect. I have no idea what the name is, I am sure someone will come along with that info.

Welcome back- at least you know about us and know the basics- even if it isn't all fun and games here.

Re: returning to the life of a diabetic cat

This is the recipe I follow along with petsmart brand low carb foods: http://catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood#Cost
I bought a grinder and make about 9# each time. 2 of my 3 girls love this and everyone that has seen them just think that they and their coats look great!
Is well worth it. Dont really know how much cheaper it is, but is definately better - imo

Re: returning to the life of a diabetic cat

Sorry you are back, but welcome anyways!

At least this time around, you know the whole routine, so hopefully, you can have another short visit.

I would suggest you changed the subject of your initial post to ask for help with starting raw diet; you will get lots of replies from those who feed raw and many of them do make their own.

I hope the food change will do wonders for Samson.

I am also hoping this will be a short diagnosis again! I wonder if it is less likely though considering he is now 12 and this is his second time around?

I use Dr. Pierson's recipe too. Even with buying the $150 grinder, I'll break even in just a few months when comparing with Friskies and meds for constant diarrhea. I watch the sales and buy chicken thighs buy-one-get-one free. My new deep freezer will also pay off in under a year as well.

Good luck!

A pre-mix. It contains all the vitamins and minerals a cat needs. Just mix with your choice of raw meat, following the directions on the package.

Some brands are TC Instinct, Alnutrin, Better In The Raw, and Feline Instincts

Besides the recipie on Dr. Lisa's web site, there is the one at FelineInstincts.com and one at Catnutrition.org

I also fed Dr. Lisa's raw diet up until I had to say goodbye to my boys... 7 years and Pooh was diet controlled the entire time he was on that diet. I did try, on occasion, some canned foods but it seems the food was not consistently the same from (what I assume was) batch to batch so I ended up sticking with nothing but the raw for the last 5 years.

if you buy the meat from Hare Today gone Tomorrow: https://www.hare-today.com/ you should be able to get it ground fine enough. I know the turkey was always very finely ground so I only had to mix all of the ingredients. Very little time involved! I never really figured out my cost per meal, but I can tell you that I spent less on the raw diet ingredients over a 3 month period than I did for the canned Wellness turkey for the same amount of time.

Best of luck to you!
