The FDMB Twitter account claims "AAHA issues statement for vets to discontinue PZI use in feline diabetes."
http://twitter.com/felinediabetes

I'm trying to find this on the AAHA site and cannot.

The closest I can find is in their website is some stuff in their diabetes management guide about the suggestion of not using compounded PZI and maybe some other things but no broad remarks that PZI should be discontinued?
http://www.aahanet.org/resources/Diabet ... lines.aspx
Although bovine PZI is available from compounding pharmacies, its use is not recommended because of concerns about production methods, diluents, sterility, and the consistency of insulin concentration between lots.
And this "recommendation" is debatable... there are many that have used BCP insulin just fine.

This guide also states that short needles should not be used [and U-100 needles should only be used with U100 insulin] so not sure how much I really believe in these guidelines.

Has anyone else heard anything about this? I'm surprised it would be announced on twitter and not in here or TT?

EDIT: I just noticed this is from 2009 - so old news I guess - I'm just noticing this.

At one point there was a sticky about this but it was removed when problems were resolved. That tweet is over one year old.

The "claim" is a true statement as of Nov 2009, pertaining particularly to Vetsulin. The archived statement from AAHA can be found here: http://www.aahanet.org/resources/graphi ... -16-09.pdf

The only person who tweets on the FDMB twitter account is me, so if you have questions, please feel free to ask. Twitter is hard for me! I'm a lot more verbose than 140 words and always want to include references. Today I did learn how to include abbreviated URLs.

Thank you for the source.

OK I do not see anywhere in that PDF anything about "AAHA issues statement for vets to discontinue PZI use in feline diabetes."

In fact it says:
For cats, you can use a long-acting insulin such as the human recombinant PZI (ProZinc™...
Which would I think would be very easily interpreted to mean the continued use of PZI [including ProZinc] is just fine. The AAHA has taken a stand against "compounded" PZI but I find that recommendation an oversimplification of the "compounded" issue.

Pertaining to Vetsulin is does say:
All new diabetic patients should be started on non-Vetsulin insulin products. For current diabetic patients using Vetsulin, staggering patient appointments will help ensure smooth and gradual transitions from Vetsulin to a new insulin product.

Where does it say vets should discontinue use of PZI for cats? Please help me if I'm just blind or stupid.

My concern is that people could read that tweet and think, "AH! PZI should be discontinued and from an authoritative source like FDMB!" And if the tweet is factually wrong/honest error then of course that should be addressed. And maybe twitter, in it's brevity, is a difficult place to make nuanced statements if that's what's missing from this statement.

But PZI [in all of it's various varieties] should be discontinued according to the AAHA? Am I not seeing it?

Thought I would also note that I really like the idea of using twitter for the FDMB status updates!
