FD friendly/experienced vet in Raleigh/Durham, NC area?

Hershey is almost 10 years old and was diagnosed in Nov, 2011. We did a 16-hour curve on him last Friday; I'm going to call the vet tomorrow morning with the results and hopefully get her support for us starting him on insulin without having to bring him back in for her to verify the numbers.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to leave a message with the receptionist who talked to the vet and then called me back to say that she 'won't say yay or nay about the insulin until she can verify our numbers' doing her curve. I'm hoping that coming back with more information and more numbers (and maybe even being like the persistent widow in Luke 18) that she will join with us in doing what we believe is in Hershey's best interest.

That said, just in case she isn't on board, I'm wondering if you know of an FD friendly/experienced vet in the North Raleigh/NE Durham or Granville county, NC area. One who won't make us start all over since we already spent several hundred dollars getting the initial diagnosis and preferably one who won't charge an arm and a leg. (Yes, I know I'm asking for the sun, moon, AND stars :smile: )

I searched the member list, and only saw one other person who lists Raleigh, NC as their location. "DaniCoz" is the username. There's also a lady named Kim (username "kse" ) who lives in NC, but I am not sure where. You might try PMing one of them?
I know that there are a few more people who live in NC, but they didn't list that in their profile I guess...

Thanks, Carl - I didn't know about a member list, guess it makes sense that there is one. I'll try to get in touch with the members you mentioned.

I've spent the last several nights reading threads until my eyes were crossed! What's bad is when I want to share a tidbit with Doug and I can't find where I read it :smile:

Thanks, Kim, I did pm you before I got your response, so you can disregard it. :-D Morrisville is about 45 minutes from us, that's a little too far, esp if he needs anything. If you hear of anything closer this way, please keep me in mind.

How far away is Cary from you guys? Just did a quick web search and there is an all cat clinic in Cary that the owner specializes in special needs critters. From just what I got from scanning their website it at least looks like they promote a high protein diet so at least that is something in their favor. If that is one that is close enough to consider let me know and I'll get you the info on them.

cary looks to be a bit further south than morrisville. google puts it at about 32 miles? chapel hill looks to be slightly less is all.

let me see if i can find someone to contact the lady in chapel hill. maybe she has a co worker or someone else in the area closer to you with a good vet recommendation
 
I have a friend in Raleigh who really likes her vet. She fosters cats so she sees the vet a lot. I have no idea what their diabetes treatment plan is like, though, and it still looks pretty far from you on the map. My brother just moved to Durham, but I don't think they have needed a vet for their dog yet.

Is Apex too far?

Peak Animal Hospital...Dr. Bailey. I found some references to Dr. Bailey encouraging home testing of diabetic cats. At the least, maybe you could call and have him/her direct you to other local vets, maybe someone closer to you that supports hometesting.

Just a thought but you really don't need to see the vet much after you get your insulin, only if kitty gets sick. It might be worth a trip if you could get a vet that would just listen to what you have to say. If my vet says anything about checking blood sugar now I just tell them I can do that & don't let them do it. I know it's not perfect but just so you can get the insulin & not get harrassed. You can get all the help you need with diabetes here. :smile: Good luck!

@Barbara - I read somewhere about having vet checks every month or so after starting insulin. (Sorry, I've read so much that I can't tell you which thread it was on.) I was hoping that wasn't the norm and from what you said, it doesn't sound like it is. whew! You're right about it might be worth the distance. When we had our cat with feline diabetes we used our current vet and were living in Bahama. It took us about 45 minutes to get there. It's a long drive when one is sick, but it's worth considering if we don't find an option closer.

@Kim - We're a good hour from Apex, farther depending on where in Apex. It might be worth a call to him, though, at least maybe could get a lead on someone. Thanks!

@Libby - Looks like Brentwood Animal Hospital is near Sam Ash which is 30+ minutes from us. Their site looks friendly and has lots of information! I made a note to check them out, so I can see what their thoughts are about home care.

@Cindy - Cary is a good drive for us, seems like it's at least an hour. Chapel Hill is about 30 - 40 min. That'd be great if you could find contact info for the lady in Chapel Hill. I could at least call her and pick her brain :-)

@MommaOfMuse - An all cat clinic?! Cool - I know one thing that freaks Hershey out is that there is ALWAYS a barking dog at the vet's office! I guess it's probably that way at every vet's office, well except at the all cat clinic! :-) I wish it was closer, but I'd really like to be closer, just in case. I will probably try doing a web search tomorrow to see what I can learn.

Apart from his diagnosis, Bandit has never had any testing for his diabetes done at the vet. You can definitely handle it with just the prescription and this site while you're hunting for a new vet. I have a great vet, but when it comes to Bandit's diabetes she doesn't do much, because it's a disease best treated at home, just like with people.
 
Libby--I've had several members contact me to give you some vet recommendations. I live in Chapel Hill. Lucy was diabetic for 7 years and I cycled through most of the vets in town before I settled on Legion Road Vets. http://timberlynelegionvets.vetsuite.com
Dr. Tomkins, the vet who cared for Lucy, is not working full time, but the younger vets are good and at least one of them helped me with other health issues Lucy had. I basically stopped talking to any vet about diabetes. I knew more from this board than they did. But there are so many associated health issues that you really do need someone you can work with.

I've also heard good things about the Cat Hospital in Durham. http://www.cathospitaldurhamch.com/
I've never used them, but one of my neighbors who took in a diabetic from this board was very happy with them.
