FD Friendly Dry Food?

Unfortunately Revson continues to lose weight... down to 8.8 from 14+.
He needs dental work, but the vet would like to see him up to at least 9.8 before we try it.

He's eating FF flaked and some AvoDerm and anything else I can get him to try. The classic FF varieties are a no-go. He liked Cowboy Cookout (but he was hungry so I'm not sure if that is repeatable). He liked Newman's Own Organic Liver (no grain), but I don't know the carbs for that. He's getting cooked chicken too.
The volume is just not enough though.

My vet suggested either a store bought grain free dry food or a RX High Energy dry food she could provide.

Any comments/help?

feeding dry food to supplement intake is not the answer. the answer is to feed more of the canned food that you are currently using.

i'm curious if something else could be causing the weight loss or if he isn't regulated on insulin that could factor.

the reality is that adding dry food for this reason in my mind isn't enough to warrant the risks involved with feeding dry - www.catinfo.org for more info about dry food

The Newman's Own line is super good. The liver variety is very lo-carb and it has an excellent protein:fat ratio. Protein, fat, and moisture equal 96.5% of ingredients.

Liver:
Organic Beef Liver, Organic Liver Broth, Minerals (Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Carbonate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Iodate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Taurine, Vitamins (Vitamin A, E, E, D3, B12 and K Supplements, Choline, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Riboflavin, Thiamine, Pyridoxine, Folic Acid, Biotin).

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS:
Crude Protein..................11.0% (min)
Crude Fat.........................2.5% (min)
Crude Fiber......................1.0% (max)
Moisture.........................83.0% (max)

Try to get him to eat more of that since he seems to like it? It's kind of pricey but if kitty will eat it, it's worth it! I totally agree with Hillary about the dry stuff - it's just a bad idea for even the most healthy of cats.
 
I am going to assume that either you've stopped testing his BG or have not had time to update spreadsheet, so it's not possible to tell how well he's doing on insulin, but from the continued weight loss, I'd guess not well at all. What insulin please?

Have you tried Wellness grain free canned foods with him? Not only do they use good protein, but they are a little higher in fat than the FF is, so they are fairly calorie dense. Check it out in the food chart:http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodNew.html One of my cats is overweight because of Wellness food, canned only, no dry. The chicken & turkey varieties have the highest calories. My cats prefer turkey over chicken.

It's fat from a good meat source you are looking for to increase weight, dry food is not the answer. And good quality food or not, if the diabetes is not brought under control, he will continue to lose weight. His % of weight loss and probable mouth bacteria/infection also puts him at extreme risk for ketones, so please continue testing his urine.

Hmm, Binky's chart must be out-dated on Newman's own because it has very high fat levels on the old chart which would translate in to more than 2.5% guaranteed analysis. For example, Wellness guaranteed analysis is 5% fat, yet the charts have about the same kcal % for fat on both foods.

Just thought I'd point this out, as the higher fat is what you want for weight gain.

I am still testing AMPS and PMPS, I just need time to update the SS.

From what I've learned here, I didn't want to go back to dry food, but I'm getting desperate.
My life seems to revolve around feeding my mouser.
