I left work early and am running out the door to head to EPCOT, but I got my latest Cat Fancy and lo & behold the cover announced an article on FD. It was iteresting tho I thought it strange that Levimer (sorry, how do you spell it?) was not cited as an insulin used for FD.

MommaofMuse, are you online to see if that article is posted online? I am running out the door....

My curiosity got the best of me and I had to go looking too...I found that one and a couple of other mentions but nothing recent....that article is from 2006.

Back fromThe Orchestra starring former members of ELO. great show BTW.
Yes, the issue is listed as December. The one on catchannnel.com is November, but it looks like it gets posted online at the end of the month. It looks like you can view the articles once they are posted. I will keep my eye on it over the next week or so and then post a link when it is available. It's over 3 pages in the magazine, with the 2nd 2 pages being columns. And the magazine does refer to November as being National Diabetes Awareness month. So get out your green ribbon and put a cat pin on it.....
Sorry I have to say the green ribbons remind me when we had to wear them in school when those boys were being murdered in Atlanta in 1980....remeber that?

Levemir is not widely known as used in cats. The first US study done with it for cats was in 2008 and that study said it had not been used in cats, although we know the first cat, Jock, used it in 2005 in Europe!

Most people who switch to it have done so because of or through their involvement with the board. Access to information on its use in cats is not easily found unless you know where to look or are a member here.

It is my hope that its use in cats will continue to grow. Not because it's better than other insulins, because some people just need another choice for their cats. I know I did and I'm very grateful to those here who pointed me in the right directions for more info and a vet who did her own research to give me the OK and the script when I switched in 2007.

When I get the chance I may send Cat Fancy a brief email about Levemir. If they can mention Lantus, they can mention Levemir too, as Lantus isn't approved for use in cats by the FDA either. Levemir is simply another med used off label.

Not long after my last post my work computer got taken over by a virus. nailbite_smile The IT guy finally came over to the office in the afternoon, and they ended up wiping my computer and reinstalling stuff. Sigh~

Here is the info if you are interested in sending a letter (article is in link above):

There's an ad in the current issue of Cat Fancy that mentions November being National Diabetes Awareness Month and gives a URL to http://www.mycathasdiabetes.com/index.html I took a quick peek at that web site and it does mention home bg testing, proper diet (no mention of canned vs dry, though), and FelineDiabetes.com is listed in the info link section

I saw that ad and was wondering about the site.

After speaking with the owner vet at our clinic I have written them about Gandalf's experience with home testing and how he lived over 18 years and over 6 1/2 of those as a diabetic. For them not to have mentioned home testing in the article is a tremendous disappointment, especially when it was otherwise informative as far as treatment, lo carb diet, etc. I also tried to mention Levemir insulin in such a way as to not sound like a commercial, but for them to state there are only 2 insulins available in the US for cats is factually wrong.
