fatty liver disease and no appetite - help please!

I know this means little now, and I wish I had seen your post sooner.

I went through this exact same thing and I almost lost one of my cats too.

When my cat came down with fatty liver disease, I battled for two weeks trying to get her to eat. It was constant syringe feeding 3 to 4 times a day. On a rare occasion, she wouldnt vomit. It got to the point to where she was keeping some down, but I would have to feed her so very little that it was not even making a difference.

I am not sure what other peoples suggestions were or how things got out of hand for you. However, I can tell you right now what saved my cats life. I had gotten the high protein medicated food at the vets. I would take a can and blend it with water until it was like a shake and feed her at least two syringes at a time 4 times a day at least. It was still not enough. I knew she was about dead, it was to the point to where she was so weak she could not move and I had to carry her to the litter box. I called me vet again in a panic and asked if there was anything else I could try....he said yes, potassium. Here, due to the appetite loss and the fatty liver, her potassium had gotten dangerously low. Just giving her that dose of potassium gave her enough energy to at least get up and around again. With the potassium, she seemed to control the vomiting as well. He also gave her a liver enzyme (what its called I cannot remember) in pill form which she got twice a day. I blended it all together with her food and gave it to her in the syringe. She was also refusing water, so I would give her syringes of water. It was not easy or pleasant. There were times when I felt like I was abusing that poor cant and wanted it to be over so bad for her sake. She suffered so much at first. Within three to four days, she acted like her normal self (besides being so thin). She started eating on her own again (moist food) the following week and is now back on dry food and fitter than a fiddle.

I will tell you, I know how you feel. I cried for hours thinking that I was not going to be able to get this cat to pull through and make it and it was the worst feeling. I will pray for your lost kitty and pray that you find closure when this is all said and done. If this ever happens again to any other cat you have, keep in mind you know someone on this site that has dealt with it and would be more than willing to help out next time.

I also want to tell you that you did the right thing about asking other people about this. I was lucky getting in with the vet I did. They had a few vet techs that had dealt with the same issue. I will repeat, ANYTHING, could have caused her to stop eating. Something as simple as a food that she did not care for or as you were saying, constipation. Anything can cause it, but the biggest thing is force feeding. I am so sorry. I hope you post something for alicat on here. I would like to see something. Some photos of her or memorabilia? I would like to see her.

Stay Strong Lindsay!

Dear Lindsay,

I am so very sorry for your loss of Alicat. Sending lots of hugs to you and hope that you know in your heart, that you did all the very best that you could for her.

She is now at peace, and one day the good memories you have of her, will fill your heart, and take away some of the intense pain you are feeling now.

May she have beautiful wings, and be flying free with our other furbabies at the Rainbow Bridge.

Sending lots of ((((HUGS)))),
Jean and Charcoal (GA)
