hello all,
I am a foster to Ezzie, the 12 yo recently dx diabetic kitty. I have concerns about how she will ever be adopted out with being diabetic and needing extra care (and expense). I worry about making a good choice on her behalf. I also worry she gets adopted and in a month is returned, in worse shape, or is dead. My husband and I consider adopting her, but we already have 3 dauchunds and a cat with a minor heart murmur. I am retiring in march and worry about $, (although I'm told we're fine $, I grew up very poor and don't want to ever go there again). Has anyone else ever fostered or adopted a diabetic cat and are there suggestions as we navigate this situation. A side note: Ezzie went into hypoglycemic shock the first time she came to me due to my giving too much insulin, she came back and has been with me since mid January. I'm a firm believer in things happening sometimes for a reason. I wonder about her being placed in my path ( several times actually).

Thank you for any thoughts/wisdom...

What's that saying about a bird in hand ... sounds like this girl came to you - several times as you say. Need I say more? Honestly, I'm not trying to be glib. I truly understand the concern about costs but I think you have a clear idea of what they are and there are many ways to keep them down. People here can help.

Does Ezzie get along well with your other furkids? Her SS shows that she responds well to insulin and might even be one of the lucky kitties who goes into remission. I say go for it! She deserves to have caring human parents. :):bighug:

Looking at the spreadsheet, dosing, recent dental resolution and no other health issues - Ezzie may go into remission.

Often times they choose us vs. the other way around :):bighug:.

To answer your question, I might adopt a diabetic cat if the future - it probably wouldn't be until after I retired but it is a strong possibility.

I have adopted many diabetic cats, the latest being about a year ago. I currently have three insulin-dependent cats and other who went off insulin after about a month. Home testing and getting insulin from Canada

as well as feeding commercial canned food vice prescription food reduces cost.

That cute gray and white silly 'extra sweet' boy you see in my Avatar is 'Dakota'. He's nearing 16 years old....we adopted him when he was 12 years old and had been diabetic for several years. He was adopted out twice previously and returned, once in OK shape but the next time he wasn't....he'd been left untreated, fed dry food then put outside DECLAWED because he peed in the floor. Of course he did! He always does when his BG is way high...he feels like crap and brain doesn't quite work right. He's loved past the moon....for a bit over a year before KT, ur first diabetic, crossed, we had 2 diabetic cats BY CHOICE! :)

What a doll!!!

Thank you all for the thoughts. I'm retiring in march as a nurse practitioner, but my husband and I have a tax business yet. I want to see how things go the next few weeks and see how ez does as the diabetes is new to both of us. I saw someone mentioned FF classic chicken. I've been pricing that out, the insulin seems to be the biggest expense. How long have your vials lasted. I'm told as the insulin gets older ( over3 months) it loses effectiveness. Other readings say they use it up to the last drop and can go 6 months. With having 4 other furry children, I want to make sure I can adequately afford things and not have to have my husband be a walmart greeter, ( although there are days the thought of sending him out is appealing, :D. Thank you for the help, amp your other thoughts would be appreciated.

One way to save money on insulin is to buy it from Canada! That's where most of us are buying it from these days because it's 1/3rd the cost!

For $175 (including shipping) you can get 5 Lantus pens (that's 1500 units) and depending on dose, that can last most cats at least a year....some it will last for 2 years!! The pens are the best buy because most cats are on fairly low doses, so using up 1000 units in a 10ml vial before it goes bad isn't likely and you end up throwing half of it away. A vial will last somewhere between 3-6 months generally (you can tell when it's starting to lose efficacy by the numbers). The pens are good until the expiration date on the box....usually at least 2 years away.

Here's the information on where a lot of us are buying our Lantus from

Let's keep that husband home instead of at WalMart!!
