Robbie's got allergies and his eyes have been red rimmed and weeping a lot - he's on antihistimines now but this morning his eyes were really gunked up - I wiped the crusties out with my thumb - gently but all day his eyes have been getting worse. I feel awful - must have had something on my thumb (?) I don't know but the "inner eye" part is swollen a bit and he looks bad. I had some Vetropolycin eye ointment left over from the last time he had eye issues - it expires in August of this year - so I put a bit on a cotton swap (as normal) and put a little in each eye . It doesn't seem better or worse (didn't expect immediate reaction) but I'm wondering if there's something better? Should I maybe just wipe his eyes with warm water on a cotton ball? or just stop messing with him? He seems miserable and I feel HORRIBLE.
thanks for any input.

Plain warm water on a clean washcloth should be fine. You may want to let it 'soak' a bit if it is crusted a lot, so it doesn't scratch the eye when removed.

The moisturizing eye drops WITHOUT preservative (ex Systane) may be soothing and help loosen the goo too.

thanks for the input . Now that we've had a night of misery with Robbie being constipated and getting enemas etc. I have to say his eyes cleared up after he pooped some. The housecall vet thought maybe his eyes looked glazed from the antihistimine but she didn't think anything was wrong with them - just that he'd been straining to poop and probably effected his eyes some - but it's odd it's basically gone now. We'll see.

If it is a systemic antihistamine ... those tend to dry out ALL mucus membranes ... including the gastrointestinal tract.
