Eye infection?

Sunny has had some kind of eye irritation or infection for the last couple of months. Was just diagnosed with diabetes when I brought him in to check the eyes 2 weeks ago. The vet is not sure what it is and we have tried some antibiotic drops that didn't do anything, and now we're about finished with a 10 day course of Terramycin antibiotic ointment, but I can see the problem is still there. Sunny just has these constant gray goobers lurking in the corner of both eyes, that rarely come out enough for me to wipe them out. And he's squinting. Does this sound like it could be related to the diabetes? The vet did a stain test and didn't see any injury, and saw only slight redness of the conjuctiva. Sunny's so sick of me messing with his eyes! Poor fella.

A Resp PCR is what you want to get, it will test for all types of respiratory infections. Herpes is the "standard" URI cause but calicivirus and chlamydia are common too and require different antibiotics.

I recommend seeing a eye specialist. When I adopted Chloe, she had an eye infection that did not want to clear up. We went to a specialist and she was put on several antibiotics to treat it. It took a few weeks, but it finally cleared up.

He's doing well! He finished his course of terramycin and shortly after, the squinting and redness stopped. So I think the meds were causing additional irritation.

As for the goop in his eyes, that seems to have cleared up as of yesterday. So I'm keeping a close eye on him now. Will check into a specialist if he's just not getting over it, but at this moment his eyes look good. I live in a rural area so likely would have to travel to see a specialist if we need to.
