so.. the shelter with whom I am fostering my newest diabetic foster from was told by a local vet that the PZI insulin they have on hand that expired on 5/13 is still good..

opinions?

I contacted the company who manufactures Prozinc, they said Prozinc has a 2 year shelf life and they expect their product to be stable open or unopened for that duration but no longer. What prompted my call was my vet told me the same thing but I had trouble accepting that answer. For whatever its worth I hope this helps. If you have a package insert from the Prozinc their contact info is on it.

Expiration dates reflect how log a period they tested for stability. Thus, it is often possible to use a product after that date when there is no evidence the product has changed (smell, sediment, etc). If you do notice changes, you may want to get a new supply.

Ex aspirin starts to smell like vinegar when it decays.
Ex the insulin dose will start losing effectiveness.
