Experience of idiopathic hyperlipidemia?

Hi all

Wondering if there's anyone out there who's dealt with this?

My Minnie was just diagnosed with idiopathic hyperlipidemia with triglycerides of 3145mg/dL (normal range is 25-160 so this makes her an overachiever...). Possible underlying cause of her uncontrolled diabetes (5u Levemir BID). We are starting her on Bezafibrate.

Looks like @Alexander Dominguez asked about this back in 2019 but doesn't look like he's still active here, I'm hopeful this will get his attention though!!

Vet recommends a low fat diet - she is proposing Purina OM and Hill's w/d though when I look at Dr Pierson's chart they don't seem particularly low fat AND of course are high carb. When I filter her list, I find other better options.

I'd appreciate any advice from others dealing with this condition.

I am still super confused how the vet is recommending prescription 'low fat' food that is 30% (OM) or 38% (w/d) fat. Even ignoring the carbs. I sent emails to Hill's and Purina today. Chewy has some data for one OM variety that is also high.

In my reading I see recommendations for a diet which contains less than 10 % fat (petmd, vetbook and wagwalking websites). Good number of options from Tiki and Weruva.

We have started treating with Bezafibrate.

Have you made Thyroid tests to rule out that as underlaying cause?

I don't understand this. Can you please clarify?

Vet diagnosed based on triglycerides of 3145 (normal range 25-160 mg/dL). No mention of thyroid tests so far and we have been dealing with ketosis and hypokalemia in hospital and now out-patient. Thanks for the tip, will follow up with vet.
