Excessive vocalization

My Mister has always been a very vocal cat. But since his diabetes arose he is more vocal that usual. It's almost non stop and I think it's to the point where his throat gets dry and he wants to drink water constantly. It doesn't bother me or upset me. I just worry--could he be in pain or something? I usually give in to his meowing and give him food or pet him and he quiets down for a while but as soon as I stop paying attention to him it begins again. If I look at him he meows even more. His meow sounds different when he is with his friends in his cat room and when he is in the house with us.

Thoughts? Concerns? Comments? Suggestions?

Thank you.

Unregulated diabetics are literally starving to death because their bodies aren't processing the food. How much and what does he eat?

What insulin and how much? Are you testing at home and could you share some blood glucose levels?

He eats blue buffalo and about two handfuls a day. His sugar is around 185 usually. He gets 1 unit of ProZinc twice a day...

Well, the Blue Bufalo isn't low carb. Evo Cat and Kitten dry and Young Again 0 Carb are low carb.

It is better for cats to eat wet food, though, because their thirst drive won't prompt them to drink much water. This may lead to kidner or bladder stones, bladder infection, or kidney damage over time.

Any food changes should be made gradually, about 20-25% per day, to avoid GI upsets.

Also, you must be home testing, as the change to low carb may drop the glucose 100 mg/dL and reduce the insulin dose ... sometimes down to 0.

He may be vocalizing more, because he is still quite hungry. 185 while not overly high a BG is still considered above normal BG level and the cat probably is hungry, cause he needs more food as he isn't processing it correctly.

As previously mentioned, dry food is not the best food choice to give a cat, especially a diabetic. If you can start introducing low carb canned food, you will probably see a marked improvement in his BG levels as well as less vocalization due to hunger.

When Maui started, I had to teach her how to eat canned food - she only ate dry. It took several weeks of me spoon feeding her every meal, until she finally licked the spoon and tried it on her own. She could go through 2-3 cans of Fancy Feast at each meal and I fed her 3-4 times a day.

Today, she is in remission and will eat 2 cans or so a day. A huge difference in the amount of food she requires or wants.
