I apologize for not updating in quite some time. Work and my own health issues plus a non functioning computer have kept me away.
Murphy has been OTJ since late July but has had a myriad of other health issues...ulcers in each eye with many vet trips including a specialist, green diarrhea & other tummy issues and now Excessive Drooling. This started all of a sudden Friday evening and was so bad I took him to the ER. They gave him a shot for nausea but nothing else. We went to the Vet yesterday and they did blood work, x-rays of abdomen and chest as he has had coughing fits and checked his teeth. There are a couple that have redness, but not that bad that they need to come out asap per the vet. X-rays were good, protein and calcium were high which the vet said could be due to their calculations which may not be 100%. I know high calcium can indicate cancer. The shot they gave him stopped the drooling for about 6 hours. Its not as intense as it was Friday night and yesterday, but is still very persisting. He eats, grooms, sleeps and is drinking some water. I don't think he has pooped, but just remembered the vet said his anal gland (one only) had to be "expressed"?. The vet also said they knew of a couple of cases and it cleared up in a few days. It could be neurological or viral. Murphy's nose is now dripping too. He has had such a bad year and I have reconciled myself that this may not be an easy fix and if it is "neuro", could be really bad, but am hopeful. I am taking him back to the vet tomorrow if the drooling does not stop overnight. Anyone else ever had this condition in their loved one or know more about it?

It can happen in
- stomatis - but you aren't describing the kind of mouth a stomatitis cat has.
- some drooling may happen in porto-systemic shunt, a malformation of the circulatory system near the liver (I think)

And probably a whole host of other things.

Did you google it?

I have been allover the place. the vet said his mouth looks good. his one kidney value was a bit off, but not horrendous. I have found quite a few cat sites after posting that this may be the flu. he has had or still has the herpes virus and that's why he has had the eye inflammations and ulcers that don't seem to heal. he and his older brother bosco used to trade colds back n forth. bosco had rhino issues while for murphy it was his eyes. I feel so bad fir my little guy. every so often he awakes from sleeping and seems to have a blob of drool. otherwise it just drips.

My niece's cat (sister to 2 of mine) had a severe sinus infection that took taking antibiotics for 2 months to get rid of, she drooled, I think part of it is they cannot breathe thru their noses and so breathe thru their mouths and with them open all the time they just drool, with just the sinus infection her cat had lost weight and looked like she was dying, a veteran of chronic sinus infections myself I took her to the vet and insisted they put her on long term antibiotics, she is doing great now, just so you know she is 11 years old and was healthy otherwise, if your cat is diabetic it might take even longer to get over something like this. I will send happy thoughts your way that it is something this simple and not something more serious.

Ulcers in the mouth or eyes suggest calici virus to me.

l-lysine shouldn't hurt, may help, in appropriate, time-limited doses of 500 mg/day. It is an amino acid, a protein building block.

There are other supplements which may support the immune system. Some folks swear by them, some say don't waste your money. If you search on FIV, feline stomatitis, or feline calici virus, you may see some of them.

Here's one site.
Here's another.

Oh thank you for all of the great info.
Murphy is 12 1/2 and was Diabetic for just over 1 1/2 months...sounds weird, I know. He had gotten a Steroid injection in May of this year from a vet near home (not my regular as they couldn't get him in) for terrible pink eyes that were inflamed. Within a month, he had Diabetes and I am told that the shot caused it. He had a lot of ups and downs, we changed Insulin and was even brought to the ER vet for really low Glucose. Then at the end of July, he was fine. I still check his glucose weekly and he is OTJ! He also has had a Herpes Virus (eyes) on/off for years and I have heard a vet mention "calci" as well.
Since he was still drooling somewhat this morning and his eyes and nose were running, maybe it is a sinus infection. I hope to be able to "pill" him as opposed to any more gel or meds in his eyes. I had been doing that since the Diabetes went away. Although the ulcer in each cleared up finally, he is so tired of me putting meds in his eyes.
I am headed home from work in a bit and will take him in to the vet. Wish us luck. Thank you.

If his eyes are affected, using preservative-free, moisturizing eye drops (ex Systane), may help rinse out goop, while keeping the eye from drying out. Did you know that tears from eye irritation can actually be due to your eye being dry? Yup. Normal tears cling to the eyeball; irritant tears don't.

Do discuss with the vet.

I did not know that about the tears and will ask when I speak with her tomorrow. when I got home, murphy seemed pretty dry and only a few small wet spots around from where he had been laying. the vet gave him more fluids, another shot of atrophine?, lysine and something called simplicef. she has high hopes for this to treat him. there is still a small chance this could be neuro but she doesn't want to go there yet. again, no mouth issues except one inflamed tooth, which under the surface could be the problem seeing as murphy is a challenge for them and no sinus problems. he still has not pooped in a few days so I am giving him hair ball treats. just a short time ago I saw a small bit of drool and his nose was running a bit. that made my heart sink a bit as I am trying so hard to be optimistic. I know the meds and all will take time. He has just had a not great year and I want so much for him to feel well.

I feel for you. It's so hard to see them poorly. Sending prayers for Murphy to feel better soon. cat_pet_icon

The drooling seems to have stopped, Thank God and he seemed to be acting and hopefully feeling a bit better yesterday and this morning. I am still toying with the idea of running home from work at lunch (30 min ea way) to check on him. I can't help it..the concern that is. He is my baby! He does Not like the L-Lysine gel at all, so I will have to investigate something chewable or powder for his food, but he is very finicky. The other cat, Sophie Mae will not eat anything other than cat food. I put a couple of Hairball treats in front of her last night and she actually stuck out her tongue at them and then flicked her paw as well. I wish I had that on video.
Still hoping for Murphy to have good health for many years to come.
