Hello,

My recently diagnosed 13 y.o. tabby cat (he's on 1 unit of Lantus 2x a day - we have a vet visit on Tuesday!), Petie, LOVES Evo chicken and turkey canned food. However, I have been reading that some people have had problems with it. Has anyone else? Would love to know.

Thanks so much,
Jackie

Back in June, the plant had some recalls. I believe I read they shut down to do an exhaustive cleaning because they couldn't identify the specific location of the problem.

Are you having issues?

Wellness Turkey and Giblets might be worth trying. It comes in 3 oz, 5ish oz, and 11 oz cans.

I had issues the first time I fed it to him, but I think it's because he licked the plate clean and I had given him too much :(

You know, Petie really liked Wellness at first, but now he only likes the pouches - so I have been combining the regular with the pouches. Petie LOVES turkey! But he is still not eating all that much wet food. It's only been 2 weeks - but the EVO is the only one he scarfed down so far :(

Evo 95% Chicken & Turkey is one of the canned foods I feed my cats. Haven't had any trouble.
I believe the recalls BJM is referring to affected only the Evo dry foods.

Oh Jill - that is so good to hear! Is your kitty also diabetic?
hi jackie. i have 4 cats. alex is my only diabetic. she was diagnosed over 7 years ago. alex has gone into remission twice, but other health issues have made it difficult to keep her in normal numbers the last few years. all four of my kitties have been on a wet & low carb diet since alex was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006.

try to be patient and yet remain persistent. some kitties take to an all wet low carb diet like a duck to water. others take longer. it took lot of patience, persistence, and four months to completely transition one of my non-diabetic kitties from dry food to wet.

Hi Jill,

Alex sounds like a real trooper and you are, too! You are such a good mom to put all the kitties on a low carb, all wet diet. I can't wait until that happens with Petie. It's only been two weeks and he eats less than a tablespoon a day of the wet stuff (except the time he scarfed the EVO) at a time (I feed him about 5x a day because he only eats very little when he eats and he never goes back to his old plates). My fiance says I am pushing too hard, so we put more dry on the wet to allow him more time to get used to the wet. We are transitioning from Taste of the Wild dry to Young Again dry, so at least his carbs are being limited there, too.

If you have any other tips, I would really appreciate it.

you could try grinding up some dry food in a blender/food processor/coffee bean grinder. i store the finely ground up dry food in the refrigerator in an old spice container that has holes in the top. whenever one of mine won't eat i'll sprinkle some of the ground dry food on their wet food to entice them to eat. then i use a fork to slightly etch the dry food into the wet. this helps prevent them from simply licking the dry off the top of the food.

get creative! you can sprinkle parmesan cheese, oregano, ground up treats, crumbled freeze dried chicken, catnip, or whatever petie likes on top of food to entice him to eat. alex happens to like cheetos and cheeze-it crackers. if i'm desperate, i'll crumble up some on the top of her food to get her interested in eating.

many kitties transition easily to raw food. Nature's Variety makes Instinct Raw (frozen raw medallions) that is a complete and balanced diet. you could try mixing some in or putting some on top of canned food or feeding it by itself.

hope this helps...

Hi Jill,

thanks for all of those tips! yeah, i am afraid Petie just doesn't really like wet food, although he likes stews and gravys because that he can lick :)

I like that you crush the dry food - that's a really good idea. that is sooo funny you sprinkle cheetos!! i wish there was some food that i knew of that petie went nuts for. the only thing he goes over the top about are Greenies treats but I don't want to give him those. i have been sprinkling those freeze-dried meat treats - but he's getting tired of them and i have constantly rotate them. he also loves turkey = but mixed with anything and he walks away from it.

he also loves ham which i haven't tried mixing with anything yet. hmmm - maybe i'll try that next!

he also doesn't like parmesan cheese but i haven't tried oregano or catnip on his food!

you are such an awesome mom! thank you!
