EVO 95% dog food... for a cat?

We went to our specialty pet food store yesterday to pick up a few cans of EVO 95%, and they were out of the chicken flavor for cats. Instead, the lady who works there talked us into buying a can of EVO 95% dog food. She said the ingredient lists on the cat and dog foods are identical (the dog food even has taurine), and that lots of her cat customers buy the dog food.

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to feed it to our cats, though! Have you guys heard of this? Tried it?

I've heard that occasionally a dog or cat will eat the others food, but haven't heard anyone intentionally buying one type to feed to the other species.

Sounds like she was just trying to make a sale, rather than order what you need and have you come back. It's what I do with my local store - I call ahead and place an order - so if not in stock, they can get and call me.

The dog food does not contain Taurine, which is vital for cats, and it does not have the ideal mix of ingredients. One can won't hurt, but the lady at the pet food store is clueless, she must own a drooler.

Just as I suspected-- I just don't feel all that great about it. We will probably just donate it to the rescue group at PetSmart.

Luckily they did have the beef flavor, so it wasn't a totally wasted trip. (And the dog food was $1.80 so not a huge waste of money, either!)

Thanks!

EVo's site says 95% Beef dog food contains 0.07% Taurine. However, the AFCCO standards require a minimum of 0.2% for all stages of a feline's life.

Larry, that 0.2% is dry matter. The EVO site gives %total weight. The EVO dog food is 71% moisture. So, the %DM of taurine in the dog food is 0.24%. More than enough for cats. I was suspicious because the EVO cat food lists taurine as 0.08% and is also listed as meeting AFCOO standards.
