Good morning!
It was sooo good to get away even if for only a few days. The wedding was wonderful and the South FL weather cooperated beautifully. Didn't do too much after that other than just driving around, taking a nice tour by the ocean, the WPB/Palm Beach areas, eating out, etc. No cats to worry about (almost, Euk is never too far from my mind).

So I just picked him up this morning. He did great as far as his glucose readings were concerned, in the upper 90s and low 100s, but...this morning he had a reading of 475. Aaaaarggghhhh! They wanted to know if I wanted to wait for the doctor to discuss, he hadn't eaten or gotten any insulin at all, but because I'm pressed for time, I declined, as I don't know how much this would be from stress and would correct on its own, I have to go to work in a few minutes but I figured he would do better settling in back home, I can always check another glucose readings at noon and in the evening and take it from there.

I just hope that Mr. P didn't run away...
 
That BG either looks like a total mistake or they fed him the wrong food. Give him a chance to settle at home and then recheck at noon, like you planned. I wouldn't give any insulin until you determine that there is no other possible reason for it to be high.

Just got home for lunch and checked his glucose, it is now 349. Question is, should I wait it out or should I dose, and if so, how much? It seems to me that it is already coming down as it was 427 (approximately) this morning at the vets, although that was on their meter. So maybe I'll see how it is this evening and perhaps give a small dose of 0.2 if it's over 300, anything less than that I'm not sure I would dose as it would be a sign that its coming down on its own. Does that sound right or should I dose now anyway?
 
Hey HB sounds like you had a really nice weekend away.

I think if it was me in your position I would go ahead & give him a little insulin. The 300's is still pretty high & for Euk to drop to non diabetic number that's a lot of work on the pancreas. Remember support not strain. So as long as the pancreas is trying & trying to bring down the BG on its own after being so high that is a strain. If you wanted to wait until this evening to see when you get home & have him on a schedule for the week then I think that would be ok to.

Do you know if maybe they feed Euk the wrong food? Maybe a little mix up in vet techs from the weekend to this mornings feeding. A mix up in food with another cat? Just throwing some ideas out there to maybe why his BG is so high after having a 90 weekend. Maybe someone fed him treats to get him to eat. Some vets don't understand the importantance of feeding low carb. If it was a vet tech who maybe just felt sorry for Euk because he didn't eat & gave home treats or something so he would have something. Just a thought.
 
I don't know if he got the wrong food, I did notice they gave me back the wrong meter (somebody elses) in addition to mine, so I can see how a mistake could happen. I had plenty of his own food that I had brought in but I'm not sure how they arrange these things. I talked Friday with the vet that was going to take care of him through the weekend and I feel that she was up to the task. The only abnormal reading was this morning and he hadn't eaten yet, from what they told me. Anyway, I'll go ahead and give 0.2 units, he's eating constantly which concerns me, he also had peed in his bed in the carrier cage sometime before I picked him up, so I'll treat as if he's back on the juice and monitor accordingly.
 
Well, he's had a pretty decent day back home. He responded well to the insulin, went all the way down to 197 and now is more or less steady at 203, about 9 hours after his 0.2 dose. He seemed anxious earlier in the day but he seems to be settling down nicely, he looks great, perky and obviously happy to be home.
I'm hoping that the sugar rise is just a spike, I'll wait until the morning to see where he's at. Maybe Mr. P will change his mind and come back, I'm sure trying my best for that to happen! Still, I can't complain even if he gets back on the juice, as he seems to need low doses so far. If he gets off insulin again, I'll make sure I can plan my trips ahead so I can arrange for a sitter with more advance notice.
