Aaaargh! His AMPS was 501 this morning!
Last night, around 12:30 AM, he woke me up demanding food,so I obliged, I also had to feed Molly as well, I was so exhausted so I went back to bed. He didn't wake me up at 3:00 as usual, so when I get up this morning, I see that most of his food was untouched but Molly's was gone, so I'm suspicious that he got her food so that's why the AMPS is so high. It's been now 2 hours and it's down to 404, I had given 0.6 units (instead of the 0.4 units I was planning) so hopefully he can get back on track. I have to go to work shortly but I think I can stop by sometime this morning to recheck. He seems fine otherwise, although eating and drinking more than usual, so I know I have to keep a watchful eye.

I'm worried that I won't be able to get him regulated, much less achieve remission, and I'm starting to see things like kidney failure in the future. I'm worried because I can't guarantee that I will always have the time available to monitor closely (work does get busy in an unpredictable way), then what do I do? I'm getting pessimistic about this whole thing, I guess I need a different perspective...

Don't let one number throw you. You were doing great and will be again.

But you have to control the food. He is clearly very carb sensitive. Maybe if you feed at night, just feed wet low carb. If your other cat chooses not to eat it, that's fine but it won't mess him up.

Thanks! I'll try to hang in there, but...

Got a better reading at +4 of 335, but I just checked a +6 and it was 500! Not believing it, I rechecked it and it was 359, which is much more believable, but still higher, except that... the 500 reading was on the last strip in the box, and I'm not sure if dropping it on the floor and using it would make it that inaccurate. Similarly, the 359 reading was on a fresh box, wasn't dropped, but I'm not sure whether to attribute the somewhat higher reading to a different box. I'm certain he hasn't eaten carbs as they've been stored out of reach, I'm less certain if he's eaten any of his own food, it doesn't look that way but he could have nibbled on something without me knowing.

Well, at least he's not hypo, and he's not HI, and he seems comfortable and not too hungry or thirsty as he was this morning, but today I'm scratching my head not knowing where this is going...

Hmmm...+7 reading is up to 399. He's been sleeping, hasn't eaten since this morning. I'm confused why he should have had a nadir so early when days ago, he seemed to have a late nadir. Is the timing of the nadir related to the dose?
How should I dose this evening? I think giving a full unit is reasonable since I'll be home to monitor. Not much I can do until then...I have to go back to work

+8 is down to 323. What's going on with all this up and down? Makes it very confusing.
I bought a new, shallow litter tray to see what I can do about testing for ketones. I don't have aquarium gravel, the best I can do is shredded newspaper for now, would that work? Any other hints?

Maybe the carbs from the food wore off. It looks like it will be a strange cycle.

Be sure he is headed up when you shoot tonight, not going further down.

I have hear of people using newspaper so we will hope it works. Don't put in too much. We want some of the urine to not hit the newspaper.

PMPS time is here, he is reading 407. I think I'll go with 0.6 and keep things constant and see if things stabilize themselves unless advised otherwise.

Sometimes an early nadir can indicate a lack of enough insulin.

Hope you can eliminate the dry food (didn't know he was still munching on dry!). I turned my household into an all wet household because I didn't want my civvie to become diabetic. Male, 7 years old, overweight...
Since going wet he's lost much needed weight too! It's a win/win situation.

Re: the food issue-Molly has a vomiting problem, no matter what I feed her, she has vomiting spells for no apparent cause, I'd rather not feed her wet food because it is so much messier and harder to clean. Usually I'm able to keep the meals separate but last night they were both hungry and got me up so I fed them barely awake so I didn't put the dry food away as I usually do when she's done.
