My civvie cat, Mouse, has yet another uti. The vet sent her urine out to be cultured and it came back as enterococcas. She's put Mouse on amoxicillin 50 mg 2x a day for 6 weeks. She said it could be as long as 3 months because she suspects it's up in her kidneys. I'm not finding much info. as to how safe that is.....Is that normal? Also....probiotics....I have several types... what's a good one for this?

It’s safe to give amoxicillin for a UTI. Some cats need to be on the antibiotics for a prolonged period to get rid of the bug. Make sure you get another urine sample tested for C&S to see it has cured the UTI at the end of the course of the antibiotics.
S boularddi is a good probiotic but make sure it is given at least 2 hours away from the antibiotics.

Thank you!

Many cats will experience diarrhea when prescribed an antibiotic. S. boulardii is my go to for diarrhea since it helps to restore the flora in the gut that the antibiotics have an effect on.

It sounds like your vet thinks that Mouse has pyelonephritis. I included a link that has information about UTIs and kidney infections. Generally, a cat has to be on a longer bout of antibiotic treatment if the kidneys are involved. It's probably why Mouse has had recurrent UTIs -- the infection never fully cleared.

Bron is correct about getting subsequent cultures. However, you need to make sure the antibiotic is out of Mouse's system otherwise you will get a false negative on the culture.
