Hello.

My cat George is 18 now and has been diet controlled for four years now. He was always a chow hound but in the last few days has slowly stopped eating. I suspect his kidneys are slowly going because even with decent blood sugar levels, he has been urinating more than normal for years now. Is this a sign of the end? Should I consider force feeding him or would that be just cruel to him?

Thanks for advice.
Danielle

It may be his kidneys but there are things you can do to support the kidneys and help them out. Vet visit and recent bloodwork will tell you more about how he is doing, and rule out other reasons for not eating. Check out this site:

He needs to eat, so syringe feeding might get him started. You can puree his regular food with some water and see if he would rather lick it. Maybe some boiled chicken? Mix some baby food in? Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top? Fortiflora, a probiotic from Purina has been known to make cats eat, apparently they like the taste.

Hi Danielle, are you sure he is still diet controlled? have you tested him recently? He needs to eat ... have you tried meat baby food? food he likes? and yes, if you need to force feed him .... cats can't go long without food. Maybe something has changed? Just because he is 18 doesn't mean it is the end. I would check to make sure it isn't the diabetes, and find out why he stopped eating but I would try and find some food he likes. Tuna, turkey meat, cheese, etc. but he needs to eat, good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I have not recently checked his blood sugar levels. I did force feed him a bit this evening but it was pretty messy and I got bit twice. Need to get a syringe, I think. Funds are pretty tight, so a trip to the vet is not in the cards right now.

Do any of your local humane societies have discounted Veterinary care? I know there are several near my house that offer discounted basic health care in addition to spay/neuter and shots. I think the office visit fee is $10 and the rest very cheap as well. I would bet you could get an exam and bloodwork for no more than $30-40.

Besides not eating, does George act like a cat? Is he enjoying life? I would "assist" feed. After a short time most cats seem to accept it. I would not give up now.
