I was not able to give my cat Blacky his shot last night and I am panicing. Will he be alright? He takes four units twice a day.

What is the name of the insulin?

Most cats will be ok with a missed insulin shot. The blood gluocse level will obviously be higher at the next insulin time but that is ok  Do you test blood glucose levels at home?

I don't know the name of the insulin. My mom does. I just go over to give my baby a shot twice a week. We have tried home testing but we can't get the machine to work. We tried it on his paw.

He may be OK, although high.

Are you saying he is only given insulin twice a week? That is incorrect dosing for feline diabetes.

Please see my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for other ways to monitor your cat's diabetes. In particular, you need to be testing for urine ketones, asap! These form when fat is broken down for calories instead of glucose which may be happening if you only give insulin twice a week. It can kill slowly.

Oh, no, no, no. I just go over there when my mom can't. She works odd hours. He usually gets his shot regularly except last night.

Does she have the main care for him?

Lots of us struggled at first with home testing and have ideas that will help you be successful. It is the best way to keep your kitty safe. Knowing the number when you had to skip the shot would have done a lot to calm your fears.

We need more information to be able to help including insulin type and the food he eats. If you and/or your Mom want help, we can give you lots.

she does have main care. I go back over there on Monday, so I will be able to post the information then. Thank you for your support! We really need it. I just want to know as much as possible to keep him happy for as long as possible.

Do some reading on this page and include your Mom. The FAQs on the Board Index page are a good place to start, as are the nutrition and health links.

Will be watching for future posts. If you want personal help with the home testing, we have some members in Texas, depending where you live.
