Sorry I havent been on this but the last few months have been very tiring. Elivs has been doing good the last few days. Last saturday i was given humilin not novolin. the pharacy told me they were not makeing N anymire and humilin was considered the generic. we were still testing him and was extra careful switich the meds. He seemed fine until friday. he will not eat or drink. his bg are very high (from 400 to "high" ) when we test after a few hours of giving him the insulin he is dropping down. But why is he getting such high numbers? I have tried to get him to eat everyting and anything but he wont. today he did not eat again this am his bg was 428 i gave him 4 units he came down to 130. tonite the meter just said "high" gave him 4 again. now i cant find him to check.husband is looking now.

When you say Humilin do you mean Humilin N? Humilin is Lilly's trade name for a family of insulin made by the recombinant DNA method. Now Humilin is available in R, N and mixtures of R and N insulins. Humilin N is the equivalent to Novilin N. R is a fast acting insulin and not generally suitable for cats as an only insulin.

Last night elvis bg was over 600 gave him 7 units of humilin N this am he was 238 at 6 am. he drank a little about 1/4 cup of water. came home from work he did not eat anything all day. I got him to eat about yeaspoon of chick and teaspoon of organic baby food. his bg was again high again agve him. 7 units. and again cannot find him to test. called the vet and waiting to hear back. the last few months this has been happening. for 2 or 3 days he will not eat or d rink then he is fine . always hungary and gets mad when i di\ont feed him. will try the vet again soon. i know times are hard for every one but i dont have money for another vet stay for them to say they dont know whats wrong...so hard to deal with this right now, anyone have ideas how i can get him to eat. we tried everything and he has no interest.

Hi, I am fairly new to this board, but my cat has been on Humelin N for over 3 years. I know this insulin is very fast acting and has extreme highs and lows. Is Elvis on a low carb diet?
In my experience with N, my cat was getting too much and feeling lousy. I recently changed to Levemir, with the help of some amazing people on this site, and he is doing pretty good. I am not getting the dramatic drops and then skyrocketing highs. I know that 400 + is very scary but look at my spreadsheet and see how I reduced the dosage when my Alley was still on the N. In my case, my cat was only getting approx 4-5 hours out of the N, it does not work the entire 12 hours, so his numbers are rising fairly fast. It will work for you but because it is short acting and does not last, it seems he is not getting enough. I reduced his dosage and he had somewhat better numbers. As far as his not eating, my vet suggested the more smelly food the better, and had me try baby food, like chicken or turkey. At least it worked for me. I hope I helped at least a bit.

Best of luck,
Pam

Hi carose, and, of course, you too, sweet Elvis,

I do have experience with Humulin N. Or, perhaps, I should say my beloved Gizmo had experience with Humulin N.

Let me start out by saying that I do not know pretty much anything about you and Elvis, okay? That said, 7 units of N is a friggin roller coaster time bomb. Giz was on her way up to 5 units before I came to my senses or became proactive (it's a toss up...)... She weighed 15 pounds and change at her diagnosis.

You offer Elvis anything food-wise on the planet or in your fridge or pantry, okay? I'm talking cheese, yogurt, lunch meats, tuna, whatever, okay? Grilled chicken, steak (doesn't have to be filet mignon, trust me...), or pork chops also work...

Just make sure Elvis eats. Trust me on this as I also have tons of tear-filled experience getting a diabetic cat on N eating...

And once your darling Elvis starts eating, you can relax for a slight bit of time (maybe even take a bubble bath), and then consider changing his insulin, okay? People and sugar cats here can help you and Elvis find your way, dear carose...

Cats metabolize insulin twice as fast as humans. N is insulin for humans.

I apologize if this sounds harsh, dear carose. My humble intention is to help you help Elvis eating and feeling better, because he can.

Love and hopeful, hungry hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and Giz, probably orchestrating special menus from The Bridge...
